Right on Metaphor. Personal development, is the name of this game. Some of the best people in the world are the ones most aware of their shortcomings. Would be a great song to dedicate to a good friend in need of a pick-me -up. |

On second thought.. there is another, sadder interpretation. It could be the events of the first stanza occur near the end of the story. All but the last stanza is then a flashback to the affair between the bagman and the spy, and how he once helped her. Ten years later he sees her mugshot on the news after she is apprehended for killing the cop (first stanza). From the picture she has obviously been through a hard time, perhaps 10 years of hard times. Sadly there is nothing he can do to save her this time. He goes to the courthouse (or police station) and their eyes meet one last time as the authorities escort her away to some grim fate. :( |

Wonderful explanation by caitsmith. it all fits together very well. The thought of the "bagman" going through all that to save this woman, and then not seeing her for so long. How bittersweet would it be to catch that final brief glimpse? |
