Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
I'll guess that I'm a little older than authors of most of the other interpretations. All very interesting. For me, the song's references to power, sovereignty, revolution, life, and the other person ("once you'd gone) are all about the internal struggles we feel within ourselves. Chris and the band are have all likely reached some deeper sense of themselves recently and the song (probably the album) reflect that.

The essential theme, for me, is about rise and fall of sovereignty over self. When we are young (20s) we think we know and understand and decide. The feeling is one of infinite power. We quickly then achieve (in our 30s) all of what we thought or hoped, and are set for the "fall" and and inner "revolution" when we understand that we have wanted or achieved has been--in a way--determined by our own battles with the context in which we have grown up.

We then achieve some new self mastery and deeper sense of who we are and the way in which we made choices in our lives. And this is a new kind of soverignty and power. But, like life, it this power from this new insight does not last long. Another inner revolution takes over.

The references to Saint Peter are interesting. I believe the singer knows that there is no external reference point or judgement or God/ Heaven to which we answer if we have "done right", that true peace is found within. At another level, i believe it implies that any decision seems right when we are convinced of our own power, and once we change and look back on the decision we have made, they seem less right and more relative.

Then again, i may just be senile and old.

I buy most of what's been said--just not the part that the person who cannot return love is in love with someone else. lemme know, but i do not see that in the lyrics. is somebody putting more of their own situation in here than really is there?

still a toss up between this and Open Your Eyes for me...but that is because I am living that one out

Snow Patrol – The Only Noise Lyrics 18 years ago
Well...I think it is about another woman. "I only thought of me..." and it fits with a certain theme of cheating in all of his work. I think he confims this in "it seems careless that I shouldn't care less". A nice play on words, as well. And, a final admission in the second to last verse that "it's a weakness that i
love this bleakness over any constant happiness"
