Well it is a Morrissey song so there's always that possibility of some sense of homosexuality. It runs through all his songs, its the ambiguity of his songs that make them so good and easy for so many different people to be able to connect to them.
I believe the song is about coming to grips with a sexuality and adulthood that one never asked for but had forced upon them anyway. And this song is how once decides to react. The image of the leather running smooth on the passenger seat in spite of life's complexities is just rife with the idea of living in the moment and just going along for the ride. Its a knock against normality and all things bourgeois, the things morrissey stands against.... as these things go, I can't ever stand smiths covers though I do love stars |
