Knowing that Elliott Smith had a strong fear of going to hell, I feel that this song is just a glimpse into a little comfort he could give himself with his confusion concerning religion. I think this is his way of saying you don't have to be actively a church-goer and say daily prayers the traditional (often catholic/organized religion) way.. instead you can have the assurance that mother mary will be there with you down every stupid path you can take. Even if you doubt your beliefs sometimes there's something good taking care of you. I don't know.. just a thought. |
