Belle & Sebastian – The Rollercoaster Ride Lyrics 18 years ago
Mood swings, emotional instability which keeps her "inside" ("inside" where? a psychiatric ward? seeing as her pockets are full of psychiatric drugs?).

Maybe she slept with someone in the bit where she's working on the 'puzzle.' "You want a baby, baby watch the idiot running." Like everyone you see out on the street they are there one day, and then gone the other. A lot like a rollercoaster- something that isn't constant but always moving. She's very defensive with her bow and arrow- perhaps even thinking of suicide, or maybe she's already chosen a social death by retreating to books ('hanging from the balcony' with her 'mouth wide open for the top of the class').

Belle & Sebastian – Fox in the Snow Lyrics 18 years ago
"but the kid has no cynicism because he is young and naive and so just plays in the snow, that one gratifying moment whereby he knows happiness and youth will never be repeated "once a lifetime" until he grows up and then when the wonder has worn off he will become the fox or the girl or the boy."

Yeah, I agree with this and a lot of what's already been mentioned. I also had this idea scavenging and desperation- foxes are seen as 'pests' here and aren't protected. There's that feeling of vulnerability of people going nowhere but stuck in a self-destructive routine that, in effect isolates them. But it then increases a desperate to get out of the pattern whether it be "To tell someone all the truth before it kills you" or to go cycling around up and down, trying to get somewhere but getting nowhere. That feeling of trying to get out but when you try, "what do they know anyway?" when you don't get that reaction or understanding you wanted- and then isolating yourself more.

Belle & Sebastian – Simple Things Lyrics 18 years ago
Simple, powerful and beautiful. When I read the lyrics, it reminds me of a shy boy having feelings for a person (a girl perhaps) who is troubled. He feels diappointed and hurt when he does try and help, as this person doesn't reciprocate and doesn't understand how deeply he feels. It's like talking to a brick wall- the person who he dreams about doesn't read between the lines, doesn't understand he is "subtle as the wind is grey" rather than the glaring, obviousness in spelling out his affections or his availability. I love that line "subtle as the wind is grey,"- it echoes the idea in the song about having an image in your head of something intangible or something you can't quite touch- a lot like seeing "your arms in a dream, and there were blue veins, blue, blue veins." He can't reach this person he is so fond of. This song is beautiful. I haven't heard it in years.
