Weird Al Yankovic – Don't Download This Song Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is both serious and funny, its an outright commentary, and whenever I hear it i just see this huge crowd singing it together a capello, in this oddly inspiring, huge scene.

Al's not really in it for the money, but he DOES hate Peer-to-Peer file sharing, not cos of the money, but because of how often humerous songs are misattributed to him, simply cos he's the only funny singer they've ever heard of. Most of those songs are really lame and often obscene, which is just not Al. It's bad for his image

my friend told me his dad went to a Weird Al concert, and he did actually do this song live. by the end, the front rows were covered in spit tho.

I think the bit about the pun refers to the "Barenaked as two virgins...." part, as well as the Oh no thing

JimFranklin, you have no idea how offensive your post was to me. I am a Jew, and you assumptions not only sicken me, but are all wrong!
1) we do not wear chains! what gave you that stupid idea? SOME of us MIGHT wear a Magen David on a chain around our necks, but so what? how does that imply that as a culture we wear chains? I've seen way more Christians with crosses than Jews with Magen Davids. you are just wrong.
2) which brings me to my next point. We most certaintly do NOT bear crosses! I can't believe how stupid it is to assume it's a Jew talking about him bearing a cross.
3) what is with the assumption that, because incest is considered taboo by this guy's community, he must be Jewish? correct me if i'm wrong, but can anybody tell me of a modern-day religion where incest is in fact NOT frowned upon?

OK, sorry about that, everyone, but these assumptions of his are too much to bear.

On a much more mellow note, and probably arising from my desire to muddy the waters here and draw the conversation away from Jews, did he ever say that "This name" was in fact HIS name? It's a reasonable assumption to make, and i can't really think of anything else he could be referring to, but did he actually SAY it?

Barenaked Ladies – War On Drugs Lyrics 18 years ago
as a postscript, i'd like to add that that rant directly above is basically what I think BNL is saying about our society. Theres all these druggies and suicides and homicides, lets just sweep them under the carpet. That needs to stop. if someone falls, help them up, don't walk around them. If you see someone being mugged in an alley, don't just run past, trying not to be seen, DO SOMETHING. I'm not saying rush in and risk your life (although you would be the best person in the world to do that), I'm saying call the police, or get help, or something!

If we all do our bit, the world would be a much better place. I'm not deluding myself into thinking it will eliminate the need for songs like this, but I do think that it would make the situations detailed in it be an outlier, rather than the norm in some places. This is an awsome song and we all need to do our part!

damn, looks like another rant. oh well, i think and believe every word of it.

FREE HUGS @youtube. we should all try to be like him^^

Barenaked Ladies – War On Drugs Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song!
"From the very fear that makes you wanna die/ is just the same as what keeps you alive/ It's way more trouble than some suicide is WORTH!"
These are my favourite lyrics to any song, ever, cos they're jsut so true. But when I hear this song, I don't think its about suicide or drugs specifically, I think its more about mentall illness and depression (which are of course intimately linked with drugs and suicide). I think he's taking the view of an observer to the woman's depression and problems etc, like he's a friend (not a boyfriend) or a brother or sumtin. Like, he's helplessly watching frm the sidelines and she's desperately in love with some fuckin' jackass, who's already broken up with her, and she tries and fails to win him back, after witch she just snaps. so now she's in this spiralling depression and resorting to drugs and all that, and he can't help her. and then he goes on to address the issue with the viaduct, how this horrible destruction of one's life is not only not unique, but rampant! I think it's sickening how these people don't even have the will to live, and they're commiting suicide, and what do we do? We put up a net! It's like, "Hey, i'm not dead... what happened? A net? pfff, like that'l stop me"
I jsut think something like that is so stupid, people are KILLING THEMSELVES!! and what do you do? make it slightly more difficult for them to die. no worries, they can just go jump off the bridge down the street. seriously, if something as half-hearted as that is the best our society can do, i fear for the human race. truly do.

Barenaked Ladies – One Little Slip Lyrics 18 years ago
Why's it got to be about a relationship? Isn't it possible that its about the same kind of situation Chicken Little was in?
"I get the felling in this town/I'll never live till I live down/The one mistake that seems to follow me around"
Like, when I hear this awsome song, I don't think "He fucked up with his girlfriend". I think: "man, he fucked up big time"
especially the "They'll forget about the SKY" bit. sorry, but not every song is about one's love life.
That said, this is a totally awsome song. I'm an incredibly late comer to the BNL scene. I heard this song on Chicken Little, thought "these guys rock", and looked up the band, got more of their music, and now i absolutely love them! and it's all cos of this song!
