Hey i know someone has probably already said something similar to this in the last 6 pages, but i didn't have time to read all of them, so i'll throw my two cents in. It's obviously about religion, way too many references to ignore. I believe that he is talking about the difference between living your life alone, with yourself in charge, with yourself as your own king, and you answering to no one, as opposed to living a life with God's help and friendship, where you are perhaps no longer so high and mighty. This is supported throughout the text. In the beginning he talks about when he ruled the world, and the seas would rise by his command, and everything was amazing. He felt perfect and that everything was spectacular under his regime. He had closed out God and was reaping the benefits of doing so, or so he thought. But then he realized how empty it all really was, discovering that his castles were only built on pillars of salt and sand, and he was making a mess of his life. He needed God back in his life. He needed guidance and support, and that is what he refers to when he says "be my mirror my sword and shield." He then recalls how terrible it was when he had closed out God when he says " once you'd gone there was never, never an honest word, that was when I ruled the world," and later again referring to a wicked wind that let him take complete and unrestrained control of his world. He is calling out to God again, while worrying that it may be too late for him (his reference to Saint Peter). Great Song, very powerful. |

I agree with deviladdictions' first post. I understand completely what you're saying because I feel the same exact way myself and it is pretty much the most frustrating and terrible feeling possible. I think he feels as though he is the #2 man in the girl's life, and he doesn't wanna blow it, because he knows the #1 man is not going to last much longer. She previously had liked him, but they never officially had a relationship. He really cares about her, and has waited a long time for her to realize that he's still there for her. Some relevent parts that support this are the following: "the twists and turns of plot that turned us from lovers to friends" "and if i move my place in line, i'll lose" "I am waiting for something to go wrong." "I have waited the anticipation's got me glued." |
