Be it about leary, drugs, two different people connected through a common friend, tow people climaxing together, or just nonsense, its an awesome song.
Love the Bruce Springstein and Axl Rose version. |

The song has a decent amount of music based off of stairway. Not to mention when playing live they'll sometimes end it with "and they're playing the best song in the world" as opposed to "And she's buying a stairway to Heaven."
Also am I the only one that thinks this song is similar to "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" by Charlie Daniels?
As far as what the best song really is, I'd say there isn't one. And the fact that they forgot what it was symbolizes the impossibility to reach musical perfection. |

@swift go lightly, where do you see a reincarnation reference in Hallowed Be Thy Name? "Don't I believe there never is in end" would refer to the christian belief of everlasting life in heaven. The title itself also refers to a christian prayer.
-On topic-
Birth seems right on the money to me. It also seems to be about these people being born going on to leave their impression on the world (their "shadow"). |

Even if said to be about the mayflower, it seems like some of it was inspired by the crusades. Although I'm no history major nor have I watched the DVD |

In my view it is neither prowar or antiwar. Its just singing that, although wrong, we will do what we were sent out to do and will not back away. |

CoF only covered Hallowed (and they butchered it.). As far as this song, it gets its point across amazingly. As with most maiden songs, its much better live imo. |

Yup that site with the story and such is just a gimmick. But I also feel this is a song about Eddie. When asked if they would ever make a song about Eddie, Steve replied something like "if we can ever make a story worthy of Eddie". And I think this is very worthy to be Eddie's story, plus after decades, its about damn time Eddie got his own song. |

Not sure on all of what you said, iamafish, but "now he knows his father betrayed" goes with the myth as Icarus betrayed the promise to not fly too high or low he made with his father. |

Without reading into everyone's thoughts yet (only read first page), I'd like to share my view.
This song refers to many terrible acts commited by humans. Showing that we bring these evils upon ourselves. Lucifer is not the only one to blame, so it is Lucifer asking for sympathy in that he may be evil, but we're responsible for this.
Roots of this theory in the song? Near the end the speaker says "Ill tell you one time, you're to blame.". Also, when asking you to "guess his name", the speaker gives examples of evil done by men, so the name is not Lucifer, but Men. When he does say he is Lucifer ("Just call me Lucifer"), he backs it up with "just as every cop's a crimanal, and all the sinners saints, as heads is tails" and since we know these not to be true, we can see that the culprit isn't Lucifer.
