| Dave Matthews Band – Christmas Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Dave is very much fascinated with Jesus Christ, but is on record several times as not having a belief in God.. The most powerful lyric in this song - "Oh, Daddy-o, I can see how it all soon will be. I came to shed a little light on this darkening scene. Instead I fear I’ve spilled the blood of our children all around." - speaks of religion's role so much of the conflict that has taken place in the posterity of the sacrifice.. Dave's not a Christian, by any means. No matter how Christian you are, and how badly you want to believe he is as well to help yourself sleep better at night, he's not. I 100% guarantee that. |

| The Long Winters – Cinnamon Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I've always interpreted the song as if he murdered her as well, I'm thinking out of some crazed obsession.. I really like the St. Paul analysis. That helps the rest of the murder idea hold a little more water. |

| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 18 years ago |

chunk, I've always looked at the dumb kid role as being the user's morally sound side - like a good angel reflection in the mirror trying to tap into his conscience and let him know that he's fucking up.. But now that you mention it could be another person who idolizes him, and that purpose of showing the abuse's effects on his relationships with people around him, that also fits pretty well. Interesting thought.. |

This entire album is amazing, but this is my favorite song from it.. Noah Lennox created a completely different sound than he had with Animal Collective, and basically re-created everything that was good about the Beach Boys, while adding some of the better penned songs I've heard in a while.. |

| Modest Mouse – The World at Large Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is maybe my favorite song ever. Brock talks about his liking of songs and books about drifters, and I agree - and nothing I've read has been able to capture that lifestyle so concisely, yet so accurately.. His use of seasons is probably what draws me so closely to this song. As another depressed, out of place drifter, I've often talked about how seasons are simply a neverending series of dissatisfaction. We await spring because it is something different to anticipate, but by the time it arrives, we're still in that same shitty state of mind, and we place summer on the pedestal.. Anyway, amazing, amazing song. |

| The Shins – Pink Bullets Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
James Mercer is a genius. The sound, the lyrics, everything. The Shins remind me of the Pet Sounds era Beach Boys with 10x better writing.. And, this song is my favorite of theirs. A bit of an outcast, finding security and placement in the company of someone else, experiencing true love on such a level that, upon realizing it must end, every connection between the two must be sacrificed.. Good stuff. |

| Chuck Berry – Johnny B. Goode Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Outside of maybe Bo Diddly, this is most influential rock song ever made.. | |
| Modest Mouse – Spitting Venom Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Since when was Brock not using drugs or drinking anymore? Last month he cut his own chest while performing "Tiny Cities Made of Ash", and was just yelling random drunken slurs all throughout "Float On".. I think its really difficult to place a certain meaning on this song, as the entire album basically works as a whole (in classic Brock style, spitting venom is also referenced in Invisible). However, I find it odd that this song doesn't have any nautical symbolism, as nearly every other song on the album does. |

| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The song isn't about Smith's own heroin addiction, but it is about a heroin addiction. The lyrics directly reflect the book "Junky". And this is one of Smith's most straightforward songs. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can say this doesn't reflect a heroin addiction.. At the same time, it carries the themes of basically every song he ever wrote. Its dark, its extremely painful, and it reveals insight into how life is viewed by one of the most internally tortured musicians we've ever seen.. At the time this was written, Smith had not yet gotten into heroin (but had experimented with crack if I'm not mistaken?), and even that was just on his word (who knows if he just hadn't come clean with his heroin abuse yet?), but this song very blatantly speaks about a heroin addiction. |

| Tom Waits – House Where Nobody Lives Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This could possibly be Waits' greatest song ever, which is quite possibly calling it THE greatest song ever.. | |
| Radiohead – Nice Dream Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Honestly, this isn't one of my favorites from Radiohead. As great as they were, the themes of Yorke's writing sometimes got a bit repetitive, and this is one of those instances (as is most of The Bends).. Still, as many Dancing Nancies (from DMB, basically spells out that Yorke "I'm a weirdo, like everyone else, who comes to that realization, not like everyone else, and gets depressed about it" theme) songs that Yorke writes, they are all great, but I'd prefer about any track from Kid A or OK Computer over this - the best track from The Bends. |

| Elliott Smith – The White Lady Loves You More Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
God, I love Elliott Smith.. No one else could do this. Seriously, I don't think anyone has ever been so legitimately tortured, and been able to put that into words, as Elliott Smith. When I hear this song, I think of Elliott's complete submission to the shittiness of the world, and in consequence, to massive drug use. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Passenger Seat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I hate to compare anyone to The Beatles, because that's just not fair, but reading Gibbard lyrics does make me wonder, "if only Lennon had gone the way of the introvert.." But even then, any comparison to Lennon was still based on that speculation of "what if?", but songs like this, where Gibbard just tells a story, and manages to do so so beautifully, really lets you know just how great of a writer he is. Beautiful song.. |

| Modest Mouse – Invisible Lyrics | 18 years ago |

ICameAsaRat, I definitely agree with what you have said here.. Whether or not this song was influenced by drugs is a moot point. It's a magnificent song, nevertheless. But I do hate it when you have people praise it solely because of its assumed drug influence.. For instance, several of the songs put out by The Beatles are praised by certain fans simply because of that influence, and the fact that Lennon/McCartney were by far the greatest songwriting duo ever is lost. I see that a lot with Brock. He's one of the greatest songwriters of this generation, and his work should be praised for that, rather than just the possible drug references. |

| Dave Matthews Band – Granny Lyrics | 18 years ago |

With this song especially, I prefer the Live at Luther College version with Tim Reynolds.. Amazing song, though. Dave never fails to impress me with his song writing, and the way he changes pitch like its nobody's business gives me chills every time I hear him sing. |

| Stars – Reunion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I really appreciate Torquil's ability to be so frank, yet still reach so deeply with his lyrics. I like to think of him as a bizzarro-Mangum.. This song is maybe the best example of this, that repeated line - "all I want is one more chance to show you you were right for me" - really hits the listener hard, but its so simplistic. Good stuff from a band I'm listening to more and more. |

| Built to Spill – The Wait Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's not "Car", but that's an impossible standard.. This is up there among my favorite songs from the new album though. I love that idea that places true satisfaction as something that is never reached.. This reminds me a lot of Isaac Brock's stuff, namely "The World at Large". Good song. |
