30 Seconds to Mars – Anarchy in Tokyo Lyrics 18 years ago
I really want this song. Is this the one that's released in Japan? I'm going there this summer. :D

Sounds like this is based on some event that happened in Tokyo... I'm not very good with current events. :P

Haha... Up there, I meant ATTEMPTED to do what he wanted to do. You can't exactly regret committing suicide after you've done it. :P

It's amazing how short the lyrics are... and yet, there's so much meaning behind the lyrics. When Jared sings, it sounds like he's saying so much more. When I listened to this before I looked at the lyrics, I never realized how short it was.
The first couple of lies, I think, is basically a person going insane. He wants to fall, he wants to destroy himself, and he doesn't want anyone saving him by giving him pills or taking him to a shrink. He wants people to leave him alone and let him do what he wants to himself.
"Try and crush me. Take me, seize me." probably means something like "Try to make me feel worse. I'm already in hell. Try and grab me and throw me there. I WANT to fall."

Here's what I think this song means...

Yeah, I've been to Jupiter
And I've fallen through the air
I used to live out on the moon
But now I'm back here down on earth
[Maybe this person (let's call it "he") was "out of it" for a while. Depressed, confused, or living under a rock for a while because he just didn't care about the bad place the world is. He decides that it's time to show himself and come back to reality. This also adds to the theme of 30stm itself...]

Why are you here?
Are you listening?
Can you hear what I am saying?
I am not here, I'm not listening
I'm in my head and I'm spinning
[He remembers what people have said to him before. Why are you under that rock? Why are you so depressed? Are you paying attention to anything happening? Can you hear me asking you this? He answers in his head that he is NOT listening (which is a bit sarcastic since he's answering the question) and that he is absorbed by his own mind. He's confused about everything and he doesn't know if he wants to care or not. This is what is described by the spinning.]

Is this who you are?
Some sweet violent urge
A weak fallen man
With the promise of an end?
[He's asking himself who he is (which also adds to the theme of 30stm). Is he a soul trapped in this dark abyss where he always has the urge to break out, but he can't? Is he weak, does he have a purpose in life? Is his life about to end soon? What is the purpose?]

All the pretty people died
Innocence is out of style
All the whores have gone away
Now there's nothing left for me
[He decides to get over himself and explore this world he left a long time ago. The world is just as bad, if not worse, as it was when he left it. It's not "cool" to be innocent. All the people that were beautiful inside have died and become cruel people. All the "whores" have gone away from the innocent place he used to call home and moved onto bigger, badder things. There's nothing left for him anymore because all of the things he remembered of earth were gone from his home. It was now filled with cruel, different things that he didn't understand.]

I'm not really sure this is correct, but I always thought of this song as being about a confused, lost soul that left the earth for a while then came back to find that earth was no better than where he came from. It could also possibly be talking about growing up and how people become less innocent as they become older...

I also agree that this song has to do with depression. I'll just pretend that it's a guy so it's easier to explain and I won't have to say he/she/him/her all the time. ;)
I think it's about a guy who is severely depressed. He's thinking of DOING something damaging to himself, whether it's trying drugs or committing suicide or something else. There are always people (parents, friends, counselors, etc.) trying to save him from the darkness he built around himself.
When he's saying all of those "until [insert words here]", he's telling all of those people that they don't understand. They haven't been through what he's been through, how can they help him? They will never understand until they experience what he has experienced. What they think he's feeling and thinking is not the reality at all.
The chorus is him telling everyone that they can't save him and to not even try. He doesn't care if they try and save him, and he won't even acknowledge it. They won't save him so why would he care in the first place? He thinks he is alone and that he is the only one that can have an impact on his life and himself.
Towards the end when he is talking about wanting this chance, it's after he has done whatever he had wanted to do (trying drugs, committing suicide, or some other self-damaging thing). He understands now that he needs help. He can't save himself. He wants this chance to live life like it should be lived again, but he already told all of those people that were trying to save him to fuck off. He wants the chance but he doesn't know if he will ever be saved. He doesn't know if he will ever have people there for him again. But at the same time, he doesn't want to be saved. The dark is inviting somehow. Maybe he doesn't deserve happiness. Maybe he was meant to live his life miserably so that others could have THEIR deserved happiness.
He's thoroughly confused about what he wants and the purpose of life. He wants this fogginess to clear up. He doesn't care anymore what happens to him. He wants someone to care and to save him, but he doesn't care at the same time which confuses him even more. He doesn't care because he knows that the chance that people will save him is unlikely, but it's also something else. He's confused about his life. He wants to be saved but he doesn't care at the same time. That's why he cries for help by saying "save me" repeatedly at the end and then adding "I don't care".
