when i first heard this i did think it was about drugs, probably pills... when they talk about "feeling as good as love", having "eyes the size of the moon" and the phrase "nine in the afternoon" is like how you completely lose track of time.. also: "Back to the street Down to our feet Losing the feeling of feeling unique Do you know what I mean?" really reminded me of coming down! then the next verse is like them taking them again and remembering wat its like "now i know what i mean" but after reading all the other comments im really doubting that this song would jsut be about taking drugs, it seems to simple and a bit pointless. I like the ideas about the beatles, and also about going back to where they came from. i do think it is related to drugs somehow though.. |

To me this song is mainly about drug addiction and depression, not eating disorders (although this could easily come into it as well, as the three can be linked). However, these lines are definitely about drug addiction: You're looking skinny like a model With your eyes all painted black Keep going to the bathroom Always say you'll be right back Well, it takes one to know one, kid I think you've got it bad Firstly, as someone else already mentioned, someone with bulimia would not generally be going to the bathroom repeatedly all night, as someone with a coke addiction would. Also, the next lines support the idea of drug abuse: But what's so easy in the evening By the morning's such a drag Suggesting that it seems effortless to take drugs in the evening, but by the time it comes to morning, and you’re still addicted, it becomes a burden. The next verse also continues on the theme of drug abuse: Yeah, we might die from medication But we sure killed all the pain But what was normal in the evening By the morning seems insane -The last two lines referring to the fact that taking drugs in the evening is so easy, and seems so normal that you end up taking unbelievable amounts, and doing things you never would have imagined you would, but at the time it seems so ordinary that you don’t even realize- and then the next day when you remember and think about what you’ve done you're shocked (and sometimes repulsed) by your own insanity. I think the last two verses summarize the whole song. Firstly he states that he doesn’t know how his drug addiction started- that “The reasons all have run away/ But the feeling never did”. (Any reason he had for taking drugs doesn’t exist anymore, he is purely taking them because of his ‘feeling’ - his urge/addiction). Finally, I personally think that the last lines are a reflection on drug addiction in general- looking back at how everything starts so simply- how at first drugs are merely fun and don’t seem to cause any problems, but then gradually you realize that you’re in too deep and its too late and suddenly everything is ‘so complicated’. The lyrics only describe one night, and the morning after, but I think this is symbolic of a much longer length of time: Because what is simple in the moonlight By the morning never is Yeah, it was simple in the moonlight Now it's so complicated It was so simple in the moonlight So simple in the moonlight So simple in the moonlight (This only explores one of the themes in this song- there are loads more) |
