i think this song is making fun of people who think that they're better than someone else because of their race or culture. "One light, one mind flashing in the dark/ Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts" i think that one light, one mind means that we all are similar, not in the sense that everyone is the same, but that everyone is created equal, and we all deserve the same, good treatment. blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts means that the whole concept of being created equal was never respected to begin with and its prevented by being respected because the people that are getting hurt by prejudices are not speaking out when they get hurt. |

i think that this song could be about suicide. someone, maybe whatshername like others have said, is talking to st jimmy asking for help because she wants to die but is not strong enough to do it herself. "Take away the sensation inside" and "I can't take this feeling anymore" suggest that she is done dealing with everything, she cant take it anymore and it has to end. "Give me a kiss goodnight and everything will be alright/ Tell me that I won't feel a thing/ So give me Novacaine" suggests suicide as well. when she says give me a long kiss goodnight, she is saying that this will be their last kiss, her longest sleep, so they had better make this kiss a good one. tell me i wont feel a thing could mean that she is asking him to reassure her that it wont hurt anymore when shes dead. when she says give me novacaine, she means that she has so much pain that the only novacaine that will work on so much pain is suicide. |

im not sure what i think this song really means, but i think one meaning could be about how art is a universal language, like when it says "The line moves slowly past the electric fence/ Across the borders between continents/ In the cathedrals of New York and Rome" it could be talking about the line as the lines in the art, and how the art can travel across the electric fences of the borders, and across the borders of continents. even if you are in new york you can still understand the art that is in rome. also when it says "Someone is watching all of the outsiders/ The line moves slowly through the numbered gate/ Past the mosaic of the head of state" it could be saying that there is always someone watching you when you're in a foreign country, but you can always go to the art and always understand it. and the line again being the lines in the artwork can move through the classes, whether you are rich or poor or inbetween you can still understand and appreciate it. the head of state is talking about the government and how the art goes past the government and you dont need to bbe a citizen of a country to appreciate it's art. |
