Nine Inch Nails – Capital G Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, Trent Reznor allegedly said "G" stands for Greed (I don't know for sure, can't read german and haven't checked further) but capital G isn't the whole meaning of the song (and what would trent know anyway ;)

Re pdrpdr's comments on "I pushed a button and elected him to office and" ... I think you have to read the whole verse/song and draw the dots ... "I pushed a button ... and he dropped the bomb ... and some other people watched on the tv and didn't think about it... have some personal accountability, the lot of you"

Agree with ThatGuyNamedRyan, I think this is pretty obvious on the back of "Hyperpower!", may as well post my hyperpower comments here too (coz they are so amazing ;) and in case anyone is interested in the political ideas behind this song)

"While you're all learning about 'hyperpower' on wikipedia you should maybe look up Francis Fukuyama and "The End of History and the Last Man" while you're at it. "Hyperpower" is one interpretation of a particular point in time, "The Beginning of the End" is another, essential reading for this idea being Paul Kennedy's "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers". The songs work best as a pair. Great to see NIN has followed through on the political turn the project took in "With Teeth"!

I agree on the suicide bomber call, or something similar. Imagine you're that kid who just shot up the college in the US killing 32 innocents... and listen to the song ... and imagine you're the kid ... and listen to the song... and imagine the moment when you ... tip over. But don't imagine too hard! We all have this potential inside us.

Oh and I also reckon: forget trying to link this and the other YZ songs too tightly to the whole YZ multimedia experience... The point of all that is to make people engage with the songs more, and it seems to be working, except when they are interpreted solely in the light of the YZ backing story, which seems to miss the point. It's all about today, 2007 is Year Zero.

My vote is for Globalisation. The song focuses upon connections between individual actions, or lack thereof (domestic political choices, greed, consumption, hypocrisy, absence of any sense of personal responsibility, failure to politically activate on issues...) and the global consequences of those actions in today's world (military, environmental, cultural, economic ... ). One or maybe two references to the role of global media in this equation as well.

That's what I think anyway! I'd say it's definitely NOT about George Bush or god (or God). In fact that's exactly what it ISN'T about. Each of these Gs is a middleman and a scapegoat by the logic of this piece.
