It's so obvious. He calls himself a hikikomori, meaning the phenomenon in japan where adolescents crack under the pressure of Japanese life and lock themselves in their rooms.. for years. This is clearly a hikikomori yearning for what he left behind... right outside his window. He realizes what a freak he is and knows that he will be ostracized if and when he emerges. Since they're already kind of messed up in the head to decide to live their life that way, you can assume their imagination might be a little wonky as well. |

The 'evil' government lmao! I think MOST people only see the relationship with JtHM because of all those fanvids using this song out there. They insist and insist- well, maybe the song's not only about that... Wouldn't they feel silly then? |

Okay, this song is just too obvious and would take too much time to explain wholly but.. the last line seems like a direct reference to Interview with the Vampire ("what have you learned from what has been shown?"). You know, when the interviewer asks to be made a vampire and Louis is like 'WTF have you not learned ANYTHING from my story'? |

Er... I think there aren't two many metaphors. The whole song is probably one, though I just see it as a story. It seems like the narrator has some serious physical deformity and has had a surgery leaving them.. freakish-looking (the mention of the face tied by string and the pain in the chest). That's why they can only do solitary work for a living (it's obvious people can't bear to look at them because they say only animals like them).
All the references of being alone suggest the narrator's obvious alienation resulting from their appearance.
The part about the women telling her things by the stump makes me imagine some old lady telling little kids wild stories (the part about the bell and wings). The narrator hears these stories and doesn't believe/understand them. Perhaps they had this deformity all their life and thus never learned to hope?
It's a confusing song, but this is how I saw it. |

When I first heard it what I thought about was aliens. "Against the law to talk about the rocket in the park" - Roswell! Well, a crash in the SU would be illegal to talk about. I thought sending it to be examined by a scientific team would refer to sending the alien bodies off. The isolation the narrator experiences ("I make no friends") could be due to them insisting in the truth and having no on believe them. Then they start going a little crazy after being viewed as such for so long. Maybe not though, I think Melora is trying to express something a bit more complicated than the plot of an old scifi movie... |

Maybe I'm totally off the bat, but I think this song is describing a young boy with schizophrenia who's having problems understanding which of his 2(+) personalities is the dominant one. It reminds me of JtHM (maybe the title is more than coincidental?), where Johnny and the Doughboys battle over control of Nny's actions.
It's obvious that the song is describing schizophrenia because Serj uses the same tone of voice when speaking as both characters. Also, the last time he sings "Sweet little boy- Johnny/ Sweet little boy- Roger" it almost sounds like he's saying "-Johnny/ MY NAME IS Roger". If this was intentional, it definately demonstrates the internal conflict Johnny/Roger is having. The personalities aren't entirely opposite, but almost... and they have to be, or else they wouldn't be more than one personality, would they?
Maybe I'm wrong, but it made sense to me. |
