written about her own time working in a factory assembly baby buggies or something like that. interesting point, at the factory there was this sandwich man who came round everyday and he had two sausage sandwiches which Patti used to crave, but there were two women who ruled the factory who would always take them. Patti wanted one so bad, so to distract herself she took a walk at lunch time and ended up at a book store where she found the book 'Illuminations' by Aruthur Rimbaud. she bought it because she liked the look of his name. she was reading it at work, with half being French then translated to English and got in trouble because the people at the factory thought it was communist book because it was foreign. she almost lost her job because of it, and attached a lot of sentimentality to it before she even read it. that was how her love of Rimbaud began :) |

i agree, there should be more comments on her. all her lyrics have some deeper meaning. i think this is dedicated to, in particular, Arthur Rimbaud, among others. possibly Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix as she highly admired them all. |

i'm not sure about this, but i think 'the boy' refers to Robert Mapplethorpe, a close friend and the photographer of the cover of Horses, whom she was living with at the time. it's something to do with them believing they were destined for greater things as Patti had always believed she was going to be famous even though all through her adolescence she hadn't displayed any particular talent in anything, not even writing. she went to New York and met Robert and the two planned to make the big time together. it's been a while since i read her biography so i could be completely off the mark but i think that's it. |

this was originally written by Bruce Springsteen for Darkness on the Edge of Town, but it didn't fit in with the rest of the album. Patti Smith was working on her album Easter in the same studio and the pair exchanged tapes or something and she reworked the song, changing the lyrics i prefer the Patti Smith version, though I do like this version as well.
