To me this song is saying that he didnt realize what a wonderful thing he had until it was gone, and had had enough. "And with a sad heart I say bye to you and wave Kicking shadows on the street for every mistake that I had made" He is thanking her for showing him how to be himslef again, he was addicted to drink/drugs and she was always there, but she finally gave up, and he then realizes she was right and tried to pull his life back together. "I’m sober now for 3 whole months it’s one accomplishment that you helped me with The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won’t touch again" He reminisces and wants the 'old times' back Just make a smile come back and shine just like is used to be "And then she whispered “how can you do this to me?” But deep down he knows she is much better now, happier. "Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn’t do for you" This song means so much to me, as i believe i have been through what is talked about in this song.
