Vic Chesnutt – Independence Day Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I can't believe you are/were either. I've read these lyrics and your post multiple times. I signed in today for the first time in over two years to tell you this... and to grieve with you. Vic Chesnutt will be missed. I can't believe he's gone. This has been the most tragic Christmas moment I've ever encountered and have been listening to his music non-stop ever since, in memoriam. listen with me and never, ever, forget how important his music was. |
Okkervil River – On Tour with Zykos Lyrics | 15 years ago |
lol. It most certainly should be "Divine mysteries UPCLOSE." |
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – I Had a Dream, Joe Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Why has no one commented this song?! To me it means Nick Cave seems to be composed of particles that could be classified on their own as pure genius. |
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Papa Won't Leave You, Henry Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Nick Cave's most underappreciated and overlooked song. I love how visual the music is. It's almost like it creates its own western. |
The Raconteurs – Carolina Drama Lyrics | 16 years ago |
jayemkt has nailed it with his most current theory. to summarize The Milkman = Who the moms been sleeping with The Boyfriend = Attackin the priest The Priest = The father, who has JUST appeared The boyfriend saw the priest and confused him as who the milkman really was The fathers either dead or critically injured so the brothers put him in a truck and run away with their mom from the abusive boyfriend whose dead or near death (awaiting a very soon certain death) leaving all of the troubles they had with that town - including the milkman who will be the only one who can figure out what had happened. |
The Raconteurs – Carolina Drama Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song means (to me) that Jack White has closed an album with not only one of the most important songs of the decade but possibly of this genre overall. |
Elliott Smith – Miss Misery Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Here's an interesting thought. Most people haven't noted the possible double meaning of miss. As in hit and miss. Just something to think about next time you listen to it. |
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! Lyrics | 16 years ago |
So far this has been by far the best song of the year. |
LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Also, in response to earlier comments... I thought that Garden State was a fantastic movie that truly emphasized twentysomething MEANINGFUL angst. The angst had a purpose and it was real. Unlike several bands today that try to make money off of fake angst because of the wide appeal. Also, as much as I love Franz Ferdinand... The LCD original is just flat out better. It's a good cover but it just can't match this musically (which is surprising because it's a FF song) or emotionally. I'll agree with the poster who said the meaning got lost in translation. My tentative vote for best song of 2007. |
LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends Lyrics | 16 years ago |
My favorite line of this song is definitely "When your drunk and the kids look impossibly tanned you think over and over "Hey, I'm finally dead." I think this song (and album) is a huge step forward for James Murphy. Let's just hope he can keep this going. |
The White Stripes – Rag & Bone Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Never before has a song so strongly inspired me to type this phrase THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!! |
The White Stripes – Effect and Cause Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Jack White is a genius. These lyrics are proof. "If you're headed to the grave don't blame the hearse" |
Muse – Hate This and I'll Love You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm also agreeing with codymuse. It makes perfect sense. |
Muse – Escape Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm with the father theory. If this song was covered correctly at a local show it would absolutely KILL. |
TV on the Radio – Wolf Like Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll... and Werewolves. |
Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm agreeing with most interpretations. If you want to see someting truly special find the video of them playing this as the sun sets at Coachella. Magical. |
Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is brutally, powerfully agressive when played live. Look up the video of them playing it on Canal Plus. Astounding. |
We Are Scientists – Can't Lose Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The lyrics may not be that impressive at first glance but then you realize that when he sings it... the story in the song completely takes you over. To do that with lyrics so brutally blunt is something special. I actually write lyrics in this style sometimes because I like the minimalist approach. Excellent song off an underappreciated album from an underrated band. |
Swan Lake – All Fires Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Also, does anyone think they had Mother Theresa in mind were choosing a name? |
Swan Lake – The Freedom Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The freedom to be alone with the freedom. Beautiful sentiment driven home with the seemingly straightforward and repetetive chorus. It turns out to be so much more when you really think about it though. |
The Frames – Falling Slowly Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Another Hansard quote I like more "This songs about going to a party with your girlfriend. She gets up to leave and get a drink of water or go to the bathroom or something, and when she's away you spot someone, where it's not mental but a physical attraction and your just like *jaw drops open* and then you realize, it's your girlfriend. Then she comes back over and you have second thoughts about explaininig to her wat just ahppened." I think that sums it up quite nicely. One of my favorite songs of all time. |
The Decemberists – The Apology Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I had first discovered The Decemberists on an iTunes playlist someone made and from their forgot about them, but then was pleasantly reminded when our local college station played a song of theirs. So I decided to download a few of their songs hoping they were all as good as 16 Military Wives (they were) and this was the first song I came across and had to luagh hysterically because... well... My names Steven and I had a bicycle stolen from me. The Decemberists then officially became oneofmy favorite bands. To this song, I can relate. |
The Strokes – Heart In A Cage Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Check out them doing this live on a French Radio Show easily one of the best live radio performances of last year. It rcoked a bit harder than the studio version. So raw. |
Paolo Nutini – New Shoes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yay shoes! |
Bright Eyes – True Blue Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Also one of the only songwriters who could get away with using the word "blue" 44 times in a song and still have it be considered lyrically incredible. It's cool that he wrote this for his nephew. |
The Fratellis – Baby Fratelli Lyrics | 17 years ago |
They used this in HOT FUZZ and I had a small moment of Self-Realization. Simon Pegg + Nick Forst + Edgar Wright + The Fratellis?! Not many things can be THAT AWESOME. Just like Conor Oberst AND Britt Daniels singing a HARD ROCKING song. |
Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The fiery live performance makes up for the subject matter. However it does get you thinking, and thinking hard. Although I don't completely agree with a few of the lines you simply can not deny that this is an intelligent song. |
Bright Eyes – Soul Singer in a Session Band Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's lines like "Wasted wheat paste campaign post no bills on the wall" that put Conor way ahead of his writing competition. M. Ward on this song WAS a very good idea. I enjoy his work a lot as well. Soul Singer In A Session band IS about being confined and because of that confinement being ultimately overshadowed by more meaningless things. |
Spoon – The Two Sides Of Monsieur Valentine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think I'm going to write a film or play called The Stranger Dance and base it on this so it DOES exist. Incredible song. Really like the stabs of piano throughout. |
Bright Eyes – True Blue Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is nothing short of incredible. Each listen amazes me more and more. Conor Oberst is an insanely talented songwriter and riding up the ranks on my "greatest of all time" list. He could be threatening Dylan soon. |
Bright Eyes – Hot Knives Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Could this not also be about the mistess/stripper? |
Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This songs about Hobo's jumping trains. This made me think of what would happen if Springsteen, The Eagles, Bob Seger and Bright Eyes collided. This song reminded me of one specific song from all three of those artists. That takes talent. I had this song on repeat without realizing it this morning and couldn't bring myself to take it off repeat when I realized it was playing again... and again... and again... |
Bright Eyes – Spent on Rainy Days Lyrics | 17 years ago |
First off... JESUS H. CHRIST THIS SONG ROCKS Who knew Britt Daniels and Conor Obersts voices and styles blended so well?! This, along with may other Bright Eyes songs, is about someone in a hopeless situation. Not only with drugs but with people, women in particular. To get past this he makes promises and other people promise him things but the things promised to him often turn out to be empty. He realizes this and doesn't care. He'll still be there for her, even though he knows he's being used. |
The White Stripes – Icky Thump Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Actually, I think TheEraser27 is right. I've heard some of the pedals he's been using lately and that is a very possible noise to make on guitar. It could be keyboards but he could replicate it EXACTLY live on stage with a guitar. I'm leaning towards guitar. I'm just glad he's not such an under rated guitarist anymore. Anybody else thing that Meg sounds PISSED OFF in this song?! Seriously, the drums sound angry! |
Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a rant against the conept of ANY religion. It states its points even more clearly when it references things found in religious books (with a huge emphasis on the bible). It's not about being an atheist, because, technicallly, that could place you in a very specific religion and thats what this song is railing against. Each religious book contradicts each other most of the time but their are some things that link. I've always felt what he just puts into the brillianty simple (yet very complex) line, "If you burn them all together you get close to the truth." Without religion their wouldn't be as many rifts between so many cultures. The existence of religion may have also helped aid the cause of many wars in the past. It creates barriers between everybody. He sees this and knows this is not a good thing. The video is also making a very powerful statement. Conor Oberst just might have risen to my number one spot of "current" lyricists (relatively new/young) I hope someday that he finds himself ranking alongside Dylan. With this song, and album, he seems to be headed in that direction (musically as well) Easily one of my favorite songs of the past couple years. |
I'm from Barcelona – We're from Barcelona Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm going to try my best to see them in Chicago at Lollapalooza. That would be incredible. |
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – The Line Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Lyrically, this is the strongest track on HOWL The song tacked onto the end of this is a hidden track called Open Invitation I alwasy thought the lyric went "Bleeding inside for some correction" I think this could be about a friendship where one person is struggling with the other who has begun to spiral out of control. |
The Fratellis – The Gutterati? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
...I hate your fucking lyrics. *laughs* BRILLIANT. |
The Fratellis – Henrietta Lyrics | 17 years ago |
A friend of thier moms fits in nicelywith lines like "Henrietta we got no flowers for you, We think you love us and you probably do." |
The Fratellis – Baby Fratelli Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'll agree with the last interpretation. It also could be a girl no one seems to like, becuase they only know her one side. But he's seen the other and has some different thoughts about that. "She's alright, everybody says she's uptight." Oh, and a lyric correction. It's "What's this I once heard." not "What's this, I wonder." |
Arcade Fire – Black Wave/Bad Vibrations Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm not sure why, but whenever I hear this song I always envision tiny clips from the film Children of Men. It really seems to tie in well together. Easily one of the best songs, if not THE BEST of early 2007. Does anyone else think it could be cool if they took this entire album and adapted it into a broadway-style show like Pink Floyd's The Wall? |
Mika – Ring Ring Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Easily one of the standout tracks on the album. It's almost as if Freddie Mercury and Elton John had a child who was raised on nothing but Twilight Singers. It's an impossibility, i know, but that's what it seems like. |
Billy Bragg – A New England Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song is used to perfection in Half Nelson |
Swan Lake – All Fires Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Such a disastrously beautiful song. Definitely one of the greater "campfire" songs of our time. The last line in the first verse seems like it could allude to lack a of brotherhood in the world they are imagining. |
Muse – The Groove Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It was the B-Side for the Time Is Running Out single. Personally, I like this more. The guitar riff ranks up there with Sunshine of Your Love and Purple Haze. This is probably about the confusion in some relationships when their is no trust. Another possibility is that the relationship was rushed. Something's gone wrong but when you fall into "The groove" it seems like it's worth it but then you begin to have second thoughts about it and question why you're enjoying it so much when you know you shouldn't. |
Muse – Knights of Cydonia Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Also you left out some lyrics. Where are the "Ahh Ahh Ahh, Ahh Ahh Ahh Ahh Ahh Ahh, Ahh Ahh Ahh"s?! haha. Great song though. This could be about how history repeats itself as well as the lack of a God. also.. It's the end of the world again! |
The White Stripes – This Protector Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The chords are D-F-C-G and occasionally E. This is one of The White Stripes more beautiful songs and to me it's just about being extremely isolated and wanting to get out. It also seems to deal with a slight paranoi or possibly a contrast. They may want to get out but have had no contact with the outside world and are truly afraid of what they want. |
The White Stripes – Take a Whiff on Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I thought it was Leadbelly or Captain Beefheart. I'm probably wrong though. The performance of this on Under Blackpool Lights is pretty insane though. |
The White Stripes – Let's Shake Hands Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Considering the history of The White Stripes, especially early on in their career, I highly doubt this is about sex. It's probably just about KNOWING you want to be with someone for a long while and then hoping it progresses into something more. |
The White Stripes – I'm Bound to Pack It Up Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Awesome fact; Paul Henry Ossy is Jack's cousin. ...and yes, this song is about leaving. Possibly leaving a broken relationship that's been doomed for a long while. |
