David Gray – This Year's Love Lyrics 16 years ago
This song interests me very much. I LOVE THIS SONG! I think it's because I can see it in a few different ways. It's probably because this is the level I can most relate on, but MY FAVORITE interpretation is as follows...

I think that the writer is just fed up with relationships and quite possibly the idea of love in general. He's tried it before, and judging by the lyrics--

"When you hold me like you do
It feels so right, oh now
Start to forget how my heart gets torn
When that hurt gets thrown"

--he always ends up hurt.

"Turning circles time again, it cut's like a knife."

It's a pattern. Sounds like he's got this routine of falling and getting hurt down to a science. Sooo sad!!

And this time, he's obviously fallen pretty hard, or is thinking about falling pretty hard, for someone new. When she holds him, it feels right. But he doesn't want to trust it. After all, the second he trusts it, he will open himself up to all kinds of vulnerability, and once again, he risks getting hurt. BUT I think he ultimately decides to risk feeling vulnerable again, and chaulks up his pride by saying, "this year's love- had better last."

I feel that saying this, to an extent, is talking himself into the pending relationship. I really do. After all, as UNFUN as getting hurt can be, he realizes it's nothing he hasn't dealt with before. Life goes on.

"So whose to worry
If our hearts get torn
When that hurt gets thrown
Don't you know this life goes on?"

It's almost like he's saying, "hey, look, there's no sense worrying. I've been through this before. And you know what, life goes on. This, THIS could be something terrific."

And I like that logic. LOVE it actually. I'm pretty surethat's why I LOVE THIS SONG so much...

Gray acknowledges vulnerability and a reluctance to act on something because of that vulnerability. However, I get the impression that in the context of this song, vulnerability is an obstacle as opposed to a roadblock. I believe he gets past it, and pursues the relationship. It's so refreshing to hear a song where the vulnerability emotion doesn't just loom there dooming something. It's acknowledged, and then dismissed. LOVE it. Brilliant brilliant BRILLIANT songwriting.

My FAVORITE lines in the song are:
"If you love me, got to know for sure.
Cause it takes something more this time,
More than sweet sweet lies
Before I open up my arms and fall."

I think it might be his way of asking her to prove herself to him. His way of figuring out if this is indeed worth pursuing. If she doesn't love him, he doesn't want to get hurt all for naught. O:-)

Anyone else think that the way Gray sings the line "This years love had better last" sounds likes: "This years love, it'll last"? Cause the second way, for me, amplifies the idea that he's trying to talk himself into going for it.

Jason Mraz – Galaxy Lyrics 16 years ago
"I never ever knew such simple astronomy could ever come to me by ways of the heart."

My favorite line^

I think this may be the cutest song I've heard.

Mraz is brilliant. The lyrics are so pure and perfect. How I'd love to be the one that song's about...

Coldplay – Warning Sign Lyrics 16 years ago
Oops, sent that too soon... :-X

I want to add that I can completely relate to the messages about looking for an excuse not to jump in, or get committed... It's almost like an instinct for me, to push people away as a means to avoid getting hurt. However, I get just as hurt not doing anything either. So I'm trying to go with that whole "seize the day" thing... and NOT look for a warning sign. Maybe a pretty little firework instead. Or a shooting star; those are encouraging.

Coldplay – Warning Sign Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is all about misjudging someone. Thinking a relationship isn't worth pursuing because you feel the two of you aren't compatible then having that lightbulb moment and realizing, "Ohh nooooo- it COULD'VE work, it COULD'VE been perfect" immediately followed with the inevitable "Shit- it's too late, I lost them, they're gone" feeling...

C'mon... "You were an island, and I passed you by"

Does that not scream choosing not to try/dismissing something/someone?!
And lucky for Coldplay, when they went to crawl back to the arms of the one they hurt... those arms were open :-)

Something Corporate – Down Lyrics 16 years ago
Am I the only person who sees this as a happy song?!
I feel infinite when I listen to it... especially the beginning.

"Let's get drunk, you can drive us to the harbor..." makes me think of friends and all of the spontanaiety that comes with being young, and able to act on an impulse and just go have fun for a night, and block out every care or worry in the world.

Yea, that "wish upon a star, but do you know what stars are" has a bit of bitterness in it-- I see that after reading through everyone else's commentary-- but I think it can be interpreted as the kind of spiteful that comes with being young and carefree as well.

"Balls of fire burning up the black space, falling from the landscape, exploding in the face of God"...

I see bright yellow balls of fire illuminating a black, dark, space, as if to fill it somehow, or dress it up. I see a GOOD kind of explosion. Like a way a mischevous teenager would brag about doing something slighlty off color (not a terrible life altering deed, but you know, something a bit daring), one of those "haha look at me, I'm invincible" moments.

"Let's get crazy, talk about our big plans, places that you're going, places that I haven't been." I sense that same "I'm invincible" tone in this too. It's like they're living in the moment, acknowledging what's to come, but not letting it bog them down-- I see it as them joking about the future.

For this reason, I think this is an amazing graduation song. A happy one, though. It's a song to play and listen to during that summer after you graduate high school, right before you go away to college... when you're living in the moment and making the most of time that you have left to spend with your high school buddies. You know you're gonna have to grow up, you know that time is coming... but at the same time, it seems like it's a galaxy away.

"I hear sound echo in the emptiness" -- I don't see this as a BAD thing. I see it as a postive thing... even though the singer feels lonely, he hears sound. There's still SOMEthing there, there's still a memory to cling to. Yes, definately, I think that he is missing someone. But he can still sense them, and that is okay. To me, when he says ,"Look what you found, I've fallen down" it's like he is saying "I've fallen back to memories... memories in which I've felt infinite."

The next verse is the saddest. But yet, it still somehow comforts me. I'm not sure why... I guess I get the impression that the "you" he is singing to/about, misses him too, but that it isn't a depressed kind of missing eachother. I see it more as a "homesick" feeling... temporary. They still are close, and they still have their memories of togetherness. They might want to be back there in that moment for a little while, maybe that's why there's crying? But they're communicating, so that tells me they are just as close. Missing eachother, but the happy kind of missing eachother. They will see eachother again, and make more happy memories.

Something Corporate – She Paints Me Blue Lyrics 16 years ago
I like Joeyyyy's Van Gogh quote... Starry Starry Night is my favorite painting (ANYthing related to the stars piques my interest) and one of the things that makes that painting THE painting for me is how the yellow stars swirl into the brilliant midnight blue of the sky. Keeping that image in mind, if he is a star (yellow), he can't shine without his sky (blue) to hold him up. She holds him up, he relies on her. Beeeaaautiful image, breathtaking.

Another thing to consider- isn't it a proven fact that blue is a soothing calming color? For instance, I can remember back to days in school where we'd have to take personality tests, and we'd answer a few questions related to how we reacted in certain scenarios or based on our interests... I was often a combination between colors. If I remember correctly, "yellow" people were very curious and inquisitive, "orange" people were extremely outgoing, and "blue" people were calm, sensitive, and trustworthy.

If his girlfriend is painting him blue, she is calming him, right?

Dave Matthews Band – The Idea of You Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow...!!! so he wrote it about a babysitter, eh?
Cute. :-)

I love everyone's different reactions/interpretations to this song. And more so, I love that there are so many versions of this song out there... I love that Dave sings his songs a little bit differently each and every time he sings them. While it can be incredibly frustrating to the part of me that is addicted to lyrics and wants to make sure that I'm quoting and singing accurate lines in my head, it is VERY clever of him. It's a fun game, attempting to keep up with Mr. Matthews.

This song reminds me a little bit of Third Eye Blind's "I Want You"-- I think it's because I detect an element of playful innocence embedded within the lyrics.

For me, it is the EPITOME of that classic "flustered, 'I don't know what to do' , awkward encounter, taffy stuck and tongue tied feeling that comes with having a gigantic dorky schoolkid crush on someone. Being around them-- especially in the beginning-- you feel yourself feeling like a kid again. A little embarassed perhaps. I seem to be the queen of awkward encounters and exchanging awkward words, so I can relate very much to stumbling "in front of you and all of your cool friends, you pick me up, you brush me off, I grin but you know I want to disappear," as Dave says.

At the same time, I don't like that I get all flustered, so I tell myself I'm going to get past it and that "Well, one day I'm gonna do so much more than look at you."

And let's face it, crushes are fun! At least I think so. They give your mind a happy place to wander, at the least. It sounds silly, but I think that to an extent people forget what it feels like to have a "crush" and be infatuated with a person, and that they get wrapped up in this mindset that they NEED to just BE WITH someone. So then they start to forget about all the little things that play into what attracted them to their someone in the first place. To me, this song capitalizes the dancing around, newfound relationship feeling... the idea (if you will) of someone :-)

Third Eye Blind – Forget Myself Lyrics 16 years ago
I've been reading through posts re: other 3eb songs... First of all, I think its interesting that Stephan dated Charlize! That detail seems vaguely familiar to me, like I knew it at one point, but at any rate, it feels new. I realize it has to common knowledge, but at the same time I feel like I've been let in on a secret... sorta. It's definitely a lightbulb moment of sorts, you know? Thanks to this factoid, other things click-- The way I see it, "Can't Get Away from You" t has to at least be about the same girl featured in this song, if not Charlize. The blooming reference, and the girl being famous... Stephan is a brilliant songwriter, this is a known fact. Why would he repeat the image? He sure doesn't have to.

This song strikes me as if he's trying to reassure her-- a "I love you" thing, a "Though you're secondguessing me, I love you just as much as you love me." Very sweet. Especially the line "You're crazy, and you never faded." It's like he's saying she is timeless to him. AWWWW!

However, I DO have a question. That part, and this verse below... did Stephan leave Charlize for a younger woman? Or were there rumors that he was leaving her? I heard something about Vanessa Carlton?

"Think I'm looking over your shoulder
Cuz there's someone younger and you're feeling older
You're crazy and you never faded
Don't want to be so complicated
See my life come undone
I watch it go and let the damage run
I'd change this song now if I could
In the slickness of your blood "

Darryl Worley – Awful Beautiful Life Lyrics 16 years ago
"I laid in bed that night and thought about the day
And how my life is like a roller coaster ride
The ups and downs and crazy turns along the way
It'll throw you off if you don't hold on tight
You can't really smile until you've shed some tears
I could die today or I might live on for years

I love this crazy, tragic,
Sometimes almost magic,
Awful, beautful life"

Very nice.

Shinedown – I Dare You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is a testament to faith and commitment. Not so much in terms of religion, or war, although I can certainly see how both are applicable. I think it's more of a tribute to persevering in general. Almost like a "You told me I couldn't do this; look what I did. I dare you to tell me I can't." At the same time, I feel the voice in the song believes that the doubting person still believes in their cause, whatever it may be...a flicker of belief still exists. "Even in madness I know you still believe"

Annie Lennox – Waiting In Vain Lyrics 16 years ago
Ah Serendipity. GREAT soundtrack. I went through a phase where this song was on repeat constantly. Very pure lyrics.

I used to think it was about a woman who loved a man for a long long time, but for whatever reason, that love wasn't being reciprocated... I don't know whether she was loving from a distance? Loving while he was with another? Or maybe even loving while he was loving another? But something in the song told me he was dropping little pieces of ideas at her feet, ideas that were giving her the impression he is interested... but nothing was coming out of it, hence why she felt she is waiting in vain.

Now, when I hear it, I see a much simpler notion. She wants her turn at love. She's been waiting for a while, sees change in seasons, but not in herself and love. Perhaps she wonders if there's a flicker of something, a possible relationship, but secondguesses herself ("Am I crazy? Am I crazy? No, I wanna know...").

Third Eye Blind – Deep Inside of You Lyrics 16 years ago
My favorite lines are: "And I don't wanna call you, but then I wanna call you, cause I don't wanna crush you, but I feel like crushing you, and it's true" because it's an indecisive thing I think that ultimately everyone can relate to... a person you've cared for has hurt you immensely, and you want to hurt them, but at the same time, you care so much, and you don't want to stoop to their level. Ahhh, I love love love it!

Third Eye Blind – Campfire Lyrics 17 years ago
I saw Third Eye Blond a day and a half ago live... they played this song... and I can not wait until their 4th album comes out... this song, I can see it emerging as a wonderful little 'deep inside of you' or 'i want you'. It's beauuutiful.

"Lightning comes and lightning goes
And it’s all the same to me
Let it in
‘Cause i want you so
I can hardly breathe, and release
Into a thousand pieces
I have broke into
Over you
Snuff the flames at dawn,
I keep burning on and on"

That really does evoke the image of a campfire, or a bonfire of sorts. Oddly enough, apparently, Campfire was not the song's original title.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Here Is Gone Lyrics 17 years ago
On the first page of these entries, I noticed that someone wrote that Johnny said it was about a casual relationship :-) That is how I interpreted the song-- an instance where a couple is having a casual relationship , and one or both of them want there to be something more. However, I think there is also substantial evidence to suggest that one of these people is actually involved with someone else, and therefore the "casual relationship" can't develop into something more.

Going with this, for the person that isn't seeing two people, the line "you and i got something, but its all and then its nothing to me" means a great deal. Some days, they want more than anything to have a real relationship with their love interest, cause they just KNOWWW that something "deeper" is there, other days they are so disgusted that they just don't care!!

"And we wake up in the breakdown of the things we never thought we could be"
It MAY be a stretch, but how's this for food for thought.... Could the 'things we never thought we could be' possibly refer to the person that is in the other relationship cheating... and that the person who wants to have the relationship with the cheater regrets allowing things to have gotten as far as they have? And furthermore, that neither one of them expected things to accelerate to the point where they find themselves in such a "breakdown" or aftermath of their actions?

And along these lines, perhaps the one not in the other relationship tries to convince the person that is (in a relationship) to leave their significant other and be with THEM, despite the guilty feelings that exist. So they say that "I'm not the one who broke you, I'm not the one you should fear" in an effort to persuade the cheater??? ORRR this situation is more believable--- the person who wanted the relationship, despite genuinely having feelings for the "cheater" sees that it's really not THEIR problem. So they say,. "Hey, i didn't cause this problem.. you should be fearing your lover and their reaction"

At this point, it's almost like the person who wants the relationship with the cheater gives up, and realizes, "Wow... the ball is in THEIR COURT- I can't do anything about this. If they want to leave their relationship, fine, but if not, I can't do anything, nor would I WANT TO.. this person is a loser" yet they can't shake the notion completely out of their head... so they adivse their interest, "once you get free talk to me, I can feel you fallin'" as if to say, "don't talk to me until you are free... I know you feel something too"

But when the "cheater" continues to be wishy washy, and doesn't make a move in either one of the relationships they are in, the person finally just gives up, and says, "hey, i don't need all this-- i dont need the fallout of all the past that's inbetween us, your lies weren't enoughto keep me here" and moves on.

I know, I know, its a stretch... but I think it's a legitmate stretch... don't you?

Silvertide – Heart Strong Lyrics 17 years ago
First of all... this is an AMAZING song, and there should be far more comments. :-(
Secondly... the acoustic version of this song is EVEN MORE AMAZING and there's an extra verse in there, somewhere, I do believe. It's hard to understand him tho, and I can't seem to find that section in lyrics anywhere online :-(
Thirdly... my song interpretation O:-)

I agree with mavrick, it seems there was a breakup, and obviously, he still misses her, and feels all awkward and confused as to 1) why she broke up with him, and 2)why she cant seem to be able to let him goand move on. It's evident she's still interested--- telling him she still cares, etc.

I think she may even be taking him for granted. Here's why: "And you've been trying to pick me up like a ghost from the past/But you found that it's hard with your blood stained hands/Yeah it's real hard to get a firm grip"

I get the impression that she calls him up, and thinks that he's just going to be this person that is always going to be there for her, this person she can fall back on whenever she pleases. But at the same time, she's finding that he's putting up a fight and resisting, that the process is harder than she expects... Her "bloodstained hands" tells me she's to blame for why they aren't together in the first place, and that he won't allow her to mistreat him again. He's confused by her actions... confused by the fact tha she won't let him go... confused by her slamming down the phone, yet telling him she still cares, and this is what I believe he means by "my head's lost". However despite being confused, he is trying to get over her, and is standing his ground, sticking to his guns... which is why, despite that fact that his head is lost... he is HEARTSTRONG!!!

Phenomenal song!!!!!!!!!

Third Eye Blind – The Background Lyrics 17 years ago
Beautiful song... simply put.
We all have that one person we are always going to think about and remember... and regardless of why and how that relationship faded(it doesn't even have to be one of a romantic sort), you are going to hold it in a certain light, and find yourself daydreaming about life that may've happened if you still were as close to this person as you once were. So to an extent, you're making plans hoping that somehow they'll be there, if only in your mind... (I'm very guilty of this... dwelling and overanalyzing and hoping and planning JUST IN CASE)and you rememveer things you used to do, and words you exchanged... and you feel them, feel that you still "Get them" even though you're through. And theyre always there... in the background.

Just a beautiful song.

Third Eye Blind – I Want You Lyrics 17 years ago
Ahhhhh this song. It does things to me. It starts up with this playful little beat, almost teasing you to listen, like a child might do. All playful like, you know?

"The suckers lose themselves in the games they learn to play/ Children love to sing but then their voices slowly fade away"

Maybe it's just me, but I detect a smidge of "Haha I fooled you" in there. Or at the very least a reminder that childhood and all the innocnent fun it brings with it only is with us for so long. Then he goes into one of my favorite lines in the song...

"People always take a step back from what is true, that's why I like you around"
I mean, who doesn't enjoy spending time with a person who is genuine and stands by the truth? It's so practical. So true.

"An open invitation to your dance
Happenstance set the vibe that we are in
No apology because my urge is genuine"
Ahhh another group of my favorite lines. Again, its so playful and carefree. Yet you get the impression he means it. Afterall folks, his urge is genuine.

And then we have the line, "You wanna know how deeply my soul goes? Deeper than bones." Which quite possibly is MY FAVORITE LINE in the song because it's such a different way to say "I promise"-- Something I'd never think to tell someone I loved... but when I think about it, it's certainly applicable.

And then it's cool cause I start to think about that line, and I notice all this other imagery in the song related to bones... I go back to senior year of high school's english, and how we had to analyze every single line in Macbeth, and all of a sudden I see that bones are weeping in the churchyard... and I'm getting the impression that his "promise" (of love?) goes beyond bones, goes beyond death. And I remember the vampires he says to send... and I'm thinking, is this is way of daring someone to try to disprove his feelings? His way of saying his promise will conquer even those?

The part about the worms really intrigues me... someone above mentioned that worms eat the bodies in the grave, but I must admit, I prefer the interpretation that the worms are a bad person... If that's the case, he is saying, "there will be no regrets when the bad people come, and they will surely come" it's like he's saying, "there are people that are going to come who might try to hurt us... but don't worry, what we have goes beyond that... what I feel for you, goes beyond that. OUR innocence will prevail"

I'm sorry this is such a long entry... I just am in love with this song. Most def one of my fav 3EB songs... probably makes my all time favorite song list, in the top ten.

Third Eye Blind – Motorcycle Drive By Lyrics 17 years ago
My friends often joke with me because they tell me I have too many favorite songs... but honestly, this one might take the cake. I'm beyond excited-- I'm going to see Third Eye Blind this weekend, and I know that when I hear this song, the waterworks will burst. This song has come to represent sooo much to me... when I first got into it, it reminded me of this relatiionship I had/have with this idiot who just won't let me go, but doesn't want to be with me either, thus confusing me.. and iiidk, this song sort of became this way of reflecting and summing up memories I had related to him up until about a year ago. Then, around that time, I had a falling out with my best friend... and when I realized that what had happened was beyond repair, I played this song, and that line, "This is the last time we'll be friends again' sent me into hysterics. Since then, this song has just become the song I play when I get in the mood to reflect... upon the good, the bad, and the sad. Like a lot of people have said before me, it just does this marvelous job of summing up a plethora of emotions. It truly makes me feel alive, and alone all at the same time.
