I get the feeling this could be about young love, but also about making music for the first time. All the same imagery about love as dellaluna77 mentions…but then I feel that the first verse could also be about going up on stage, singing/performing to people which he has been waiting to do for some time “hurdle all the waitings up…4 long minutes and it was over” but then that it didn’t have the impression he was expecting, people didn’t like it: “And the frost took up the eyes”. Then it goes on that he knows the song wasn’t good (maybe looking back in hindsight) “the inner claims I hadn’t breadth to shake”, he didn’t get across what he meant. And finally he sees that his reason for writing the song was all wrong: “hung up in the ivory” (piano keys?) and “climbing for a finer cause” sounds almost like he was writing to change the world, like many young musicians do, but found this wasn’t right, perhaps seeing at the end that love is what should be the aim. |

i think she is saying goodbye to someone who just died. She is saying that they never got round to acutally saying 'i love you,' and she thought that he loved her, but now that he's gone she won't ever know. But i think she is saying that its got to a point that she is finally saying goodbye, knowing that this was destiny, something to make her stronger, having such strong love and then being able to say goodbye to it. |

i think this is the final thoughts of someone dying. It could be directed at their gf/bf or even a family member. They cant say goodbye outloud, and for that they are sorry. They want to leave so that the other person can move on, even though they will never forget each other. |
