| They Might Be Giants – Thunderbird Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's about a guy who has rediscovered the vintage car from his youth. "T-Bird takes her dad away" is a play that when the middle aged guy has responsibilities, they fly out the window for the addiction and rush of driving the car, low to the ground, at great speeds. But, apparently, his wife makes him give up the rush for a more sensible vehicle. |

| Brian Eno – This Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| "This" song seems to echo "Eclipse" from Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, where the lyrics poetically encompass the whole world, with some specifics such as the golden chairs and revolver thrown in as symbolic touchstones of luxury and danger. The song also reflects Eno's preoccupation with Time as something infinite and godlike. | |
| Brian Eno – Backwater Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Well, given the situation at the beginning, where 6, errr, 5 people are floating in open water in a raft. One apparently died when she "Tipped her hand to the deadly waters" (a poker euphemism) So, to escape their fate, they talk. And they talk and talk and much like a session of linkjumping on wikipedia, they soon find the conversation completely transports them from their current situation into talking about all sorts of abstract science and theory. Eno is an intellectual, and sometimes acknowledges the barrier between the achievements of good intentions and the limits of mortality. |

| Brian Eno – Golden Hours Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is primarily and explicitly about Brian Eno's research into the idea of "The Long Now" or, basically, contemplating time on not a human but a geologic scale. He has joined other composers and computer scientists to compose music that is infinitely long, yet never repetitive, made up of various sounds of clock bells and chimes. I don't have the effort in me to find the links, but they are all over Eno's Wikipedia entry. |

| Brian Eno – Needles in the Camel's Eye Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The title plays off of the parable that it is harder for a rich man to cross through the gates of heaven than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. The painful image of the needle in the eye of the camel is a witty revenge against this, and as Brian Eno is a meta-rocker, I think here he is poking fun at the limitations of conventional morality and humility in favor of a rock and roll lifestyle. Rockers aren't concerned with the why, and the mysteries of existence, just the by and by of fun and pleasure seeking. | |
