My boyfriend is in the army and has spent a lot of time in Iraq. We got together while he was on leave and has since returned to his base out of state. He told me this song reminded him of me because of everything that he has been through and seen and now I'm here. I love him so much. |

One thing though, the line [You could easily go and make your own life somewhere]... does that imply that the girl is old enough to move out and live on her own? I got the impression she was very young. |

It's not entirely from the father's perspective... The beginning is from an omnipresent point-of-view [You get nauseous now as he speaks to you]. It transcends to the father's POV after [We all follow the rules]. I think the next part including [You should look more like us] is the voice of society. Then [I saw you walking once] is an individual, maybe a classmate.
As far as the song itself, it is incredibly beautiful and unbearably heartrenching. I sometimes find it stuck in my head and want to hear it but can't stand to listen to it again. A true portrait of the amazing poetic ability of this band. This is the kind of song that will make Bright Eyes live forever. |
