Remy Zero – Prophecy Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that this song is about a man who had a good life but didn't appreciate it. Since he was so blind and ungrateful he started sinning, and the song urges the boy to go back to his old life. While he has plenty of oppurtunities to go back, still he allows his pure soul to slowly fade away as he allows his sins to overcome him. So now the question is whether he will realize how sick his mistakes are and take the secret "train in the night" back into his old life. This implies that no one has to know of his mistakes.

AFI – Miss Murder Lyrics 18 years ago
My take on the song (which I love, btw)-

With just a look they shook,
And heavens bowed before him.
Simply a look can break your heart.

Okay. These lines, in my opinion, are mocking. Davey's saying that everybody loved whoever this song is in regard to, but from hints that are left later on in the song, we can tell that Davey doesn't think he deserved this love. Like all of you, I thought this was talking about Jesus. But when you think about it, Jesus could easily be a metaphor for anyone that Davey dislikes that might have been glorified without deserving it, as Davey probably thinks Jesus had been.

The stars that pierce the sky
He left them all behind
We're left to wonder why
He left us all behind

The part about stars seems like a metaphor to me. I think the stars are supposed to represent all beauty. All the things he left behind... i.e. the piercing stars. The next part is obviously Davey trying to figure out why Jesus, or perhaps someone else who everyone loved and who was so glorified, left everyone behind.

Hey Miss Murder can I
Hey Miss Murder can I
Make beauty stay if I
Take my life?

Dreams of his crash won't pass
Oh, how they all adored him
Beauty will last when spiraled down

His crash is obviously referring to his downfall... whether a literal death or not. The next line is obvious. The line after that, I believe, means that Jesus or whoever else has some sort of beauty or grace, and splendor... and spiraled down seems to mean death... so he's saying by dying one can keep their beauty immortal.

The stars that mistified
He left them all behind
And how his children cry
He left us all behind

I love how mystified is spelt incorrectly. lol. Anyway, that's insignificant...
The fact that he keeps bringing up these stars gives me an idea that they mean more than what I previously thought.. not sure what it might be though. Maybe, once again, that he left all this mystery and splendor behind... the next three lines mean that all the people who love him miss him, and he left them behind. They cry for him.

Hey, Miss Murder can I
Hey, Miss Murder can I
Make beauty stay if I
Take my life?

What's the hook, the twist, within this verbose mystery?
I would gladly bet my life upon it
That the ghost you love, your ray of light will fizzle out

He is saying that the death of this person is a mystery... and from collecting the clues throughout the song we can see he's basically asking-- why did they go? What did they leave behind, and why did they get all this glory if their death didn't change anything. Why were they left portrayed as this beautiful and wonderful being if in reality they didn't do much to earn it? He's saying that he's so sure, he's willing to bet his life upon the fact that this person's memory will fizzle out and completely disappear. That people are looking up to this ghost of someone for guidance, that they are a "ray of light" in people's lives. But soon, their light and memory will fade away, maybe because the person didn't do anything wonderful or helpful to make his memory live on for too long, and people will realize that.

We're the empty set, just flowing through, wrapped in skin
Ever searching for what we were promised
Reaching for that golden ring we'd never let go
But who would ever let us put their filthy hands upon it?

It's saying, I think, that we're empty and we have no glory... nothingness wrapped in a body, basically. We're not glorified or considered beautiful, we're nothing special. We're just looking for what we were promised by Jesus, or whoever. We know that when Jesus died it meant salvation, and life and wonderful things for all his people, but I guess Davey's saying that no one got this, or at least he didn't. The golden ring might be happiness or possibly heaven. And he's saying that no one would ever allow them to acheive this happiness or salvation, maybe even mockingly because I sort of perceive it as if he's saying "If Jesus/whoever could get this salvation, why can't we, it's not like he did anything more than we're doing" or something.

Hey Miss Murder can I
Hey Miss Murder can I
Make beauty stay if I
Take my life?

Basically saying that if he takes his life, like Jesus or whoever did, can he create this glory and splendor and beautiful image the Jesus/whoever got... can he create it for himself? Doesn't he deserve it.. after all, what more did Jesus/whoever do for people than he did?

Wonderful song.
