I, personally, think it's about being with a boy who is just "like all the boys before"--you knew better, but continued to pursue them anyway. She mentions this particular boy being vulnerable ("I've seen you in a fight you've lost"), humanizing him, but also making him a bit inferior to her--merely a device for her own purpose--giving her the upper-hand. She realizes that continuing with this boy is self-destructive and pointless ("You're not the answer I should know"), but that they have the rest of their lives to repair the damage from giving into their superficial desire for each other ("We still have our lives to run about / To scale the mountain, scale the mountain, to get us back on track"). Ultimately, though, their relationship is futile ("In our house made of paper"), and is, in some ways, just something to distract her (or both of them) from the world around them ("In here the world won't bring us down... Out there a lonely girl could drown"), filling in the void of loneliness ("Where did the people go? My hands are empty"). |

There is a mistake in the lyrics; it should read "all PEALING thunder," not "PEELING thunder." ("Pealing" like the ringing of bells or laughter.) "What If This Storm Ends" is my favourite part, though--it sounds almost apocalyptic, and I can definitely hear the Sigur Rós influences in the instrumentation! |

I adore the transition from "I GOTTA get out of this town" to "I'm GONNA get out of this town" and finally to "I'm goin back to LA"... Hart just affirms that every place is the same, no place is perfect and it's the PERSON who decides their situation (in this case, her bad relationships). Wonderful song! :) |

I love how in the second line of the second stanza her voice just crescendos and the music swells... This song is so lovely! |

I think this song is about a young girl who has been to California and finds solace in those memories after the summer ends. She is consumed by the yearning to the point where she is completlely isolated from the world "outside of CA". It's said in the lyrics that she IS dying & my opinion is that as she recieves the doses of medication, she goes back to her memories of CA to deliver her from the pain she feels. She just needs to fly. She wants to be free from the suffering of her disease. I'm not sure if I'd be right in assuming this, but I think she dies and the last stanza of the song relfects her in all her glory, finally at peace in California. |
