| Mischief Brew – Departure Arrival Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"...my dream, we're everbody's there and nobody leaves." i love that line. i think he's thinking about friends he doesn't see anymore. for me its about wishing you could be with all you're old friends and lover's you've had to say goodbye to for one reason or another. |

| Mischief Brew – Dirty Pennies Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this song's one of my favourites by mb. it's about how initially well-meaning people get morally corrupted by power roles but also explores the novel idea that underneath it all cops are still people too. | |
| Mischief Brew – The Lowly Carpenter Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
this song is so fucking awesome. it's about workers who understand that they're being exploited by the capitalist system but just can't quite grasp the fact that they've got the power to change it. they know they're "the mortar that cradles the brick" but they're spirit has been so broken and capitalist media and academia indoctrinates workers into believing that they're isolated and powerless ("one grain of sand"). Fucking with the system ("tossing the wrenches") only leads to momentary "pleasure" followed by the "pain" inflicted by the cops and bosses when they're beaten up/sacked/chucked in jail. just as the lowly carpenter is on the verge of realising they've all in fact got the bosses and their system by the balls ("we could destroy any great wall we come to"), the nagging self doubt creeps back and in and convinces him he can't change anything. for me this song is like erik petersen just saying to workers " don't you see how dumb this sense of powerlessness is when you talk it through? wake the fuck up!" |

| The Smiths – Meat Is Murder Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"That's like feeling good about yourself because you're more intelligent than Paris Hilton. It's generally not too hard to be decent and compassionate and you shouldn't feel proud just because you can." Yeah, but hypothetically if Paris Hilton were of average intelligence that would make me a genius. My point, and perhaps it wasn’t clear enough, was that since the average person - in virtue of their support for the animal industry - is on a daily basis responsible for those sorts of atrocities, to be morally up to scratch by these standards doesn't require very much at all. As I tried my best to explain, by these parameters I could torture you and still be morally better than you. I’m not saying I’d be proud. I’m saying that using the habits of the current majority as a measuring stick, I could still be morally above par, and to judge me for torturing you would be hypocritical. And in case you missed the irony along with the point, I’m not actually happy about that; it's a scary thought. But then that's America, land of the powerful fuckwit for you. It's a scary place. I'm going to abandon the Stalin/Hitler line of argument Richard Enahobo, partly due the more complex philosophical bullshit it would drag with it, and partly due to our combined stupidity (you were in the process of further twisting what I'd already explained wrong). "Anyone can be responsible for terror, whether they are a PETA member or a meat eater." I'm not talking about who CAN be responsible for terror, I'm talking about who IS. Supporters of the animal industry. And maybe sometimes PETA too I guess, but those fuckers deserve it and it's all an ethically justifiable means to an end. Thinking people recognise that. "I've considered becoming a vegetarian before, but I figured that killing plants for food isn't any more ethical than killing animals for food." Do you think that the lives of all organisms deserve the same moral consideration? Do you eat people then? Surely then a human life is worthy only of the same concern as the bacteria that your body kills every second you're alive. No? Maybe you should rethink your position then. Maybe the real issue here is of suffering (The animal industry causes animals to suffer horrifically, that's cause for my veganism as I see it). Now don't try to give me this retarded "uuh well maybe plants feel pain, we don't know for sure, we're not plants" bullshit because I've heard it before and it's stupid as all fuck. There has never been, and never will be, a single shred of scientific evidence that could conceivably suggest to anyone, no matter how American, that a plant has ever felt pain, suffered, or experienced consciousness. Stack this up against the CERTAINTY that animals, according in a unanimous fashion amongst experts that ought to know, from the moment they're born or captured into the animal industry, suffer intensely and incessantly until the day they're slaughtered, which, due to the stupid-as-fuck capitalist system (not that I'm a communist) is usually in the most fucked up and primitive way possible. "Killing animals for food counts as a reason." that's obviously not the sense in which he means "reason". If someone kills someone because they slept with their wife, that's a reason, but it's still murder. Morrissey means no natural reason, like in terms of a cause of death, like let's say kidney failure for instance. and lastly: "Bears are omnivores too, but no one criticizes them when they eat meat." That's because bears have a tendency not to take criticism on board. They're bears. Doesn't it seem stupid to you to model our behaviour on that of other, more intellectually primitive, species? By that logic we could justify eating out partners after sex, because the praying mantis does it. |

| Joy Division – New Dawn Fades Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i can't think of any line more powerful than when he says "so you say". poor guy. | |
| Amy Winehouse – Rehab Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this song's fuckin' grouse | |
| The Smiths – Meat Is Murder Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| ok, my spelling and grammar's a bit off there, but i rushed. i'm still smarter than you. | |
| The Smiths – Meat Is Murder Lyrics | 18 years ago |

i find meat eaters liberating. i like the idea that if someone person pisses me off i can scold them with boiling water, cut off some body parts, slowly drain their blood until they die, and still sleep comfortably at night in the sound knowledge that i'm still more decent and compassionate than the average person. I'm not sure how much you guys know about factory farming and what not but if you support it, you're arguably resonsible for more suffering than hitler and stalin combined. also, if any fucking idiots who want to call PETA terrorists should have a think about who's resonsible for more terror out of them and you, a meat eater. but yeah, each to their own; do what you want. just don't expect to me to not kick your ass if you ever bag vegans in my company. |

| Radiohead – A Wolf at the Door (It Girl. Rag Doll) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| animalbeats nailed it. the rest of you are completely wrong. not just about this song, about every single thought or opinion you've ever had about anything ever. i'm really sorry you had to hear it like this. | |
| Neko Case – Pretty Girls Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i was thinking this song was about abortion too but i always thought this song was kinda bitter and sarcastic, like she was being ironic when she sings "your too good for this". but after reading all these comments it's now seems likey i was off about that. i especially agree that its about rape and the social stigma attached. the lines about not a soul taking your hand in theirs and "they blame it on you" a giveaways of this. but now i look at some of the other lyrics i'm a bit reluctant somehow to throw away my first theory. "as if you don't know why you're here" sounds a bit accusing. i dunno, i'm ambivalent about this. maybe so's niko and that's the point? |

| Asian Dub Foundation – Black White Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| one of their best! why's hardly anyone commented on this fucking awesome band? how depressing, they're probably all over commenting on jay-z or some shit. | |
| Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| pointing out the obvious (that that fucking idiot bush is lying through his teeth when he manipulates people with his bullshit claims about carrying out god's will) is NOT mocking people's faith. (hey, but you know what is?) for a start connor oburst believes in god. anyone who decisively draws the conclusion that he's an atheist after hearing this song is a fucking idiot. not looking at anyone in particular *cough*kyleee*cough* | |
| Brother Ali – Uncle Sam Goddamn Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
dude, this is one of the best hip hop track i've ever fuckin heard. there's mistakes here though, it should be "bow to the fat and lazy", not "the fact that we're lazy" its "started acting foul" and the spelling of reign is annoying the hell out of me as well. sorry for my analness. just because the majority of it happened somewhere else doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't the most despicable. it may well have been the most hipocritical of slave trades, what, with all that constitutional rhetoric those fuckin idiots pulled about liberty and equality. you'd think they'd have known better. what's to be defensive about anyway? i don't get patriotism. is it that you believe your slab of dirt's better than another slab of dirt? or is all dirt dirt and it's the leaders that control the people what you're proud of? cos anyone proud of bush needs serious help. or is it that old piece of paper that no one's ever paid any attention to (except in relation to your right to shoot each other)that you're proud of? i don't hate american people, but i just don't understand how anyone can be proud to live there. |

| Radiohead – We Suck Young Blood. (Your Time Is Up.) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| uh, read over what other people said - you're prolly right. I reckon Thom does have a tendency to talk shit in interviews though so I wouldn't take his word for gospel. i don't blame him - i think he really hates interviews, he ought to make some fun of them. | |
| Radiohead – We Suck Young Blood. (Your Time Is Up.) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i think this song's about factory farming. i think it could be applied to many currentday situations whereby the strong are sucking the blood of those who are defenseless, but knowing thom yorke i reckon its probably most inspired by the animal industries. | |

thank you poprocksck. jeez. best VU song? you're kidding right? THIS is better than venus in furs? |

| The Velvet Underground – After Hours Lyrics | 18 years ago |

this is the best song ever written that begins with A. it actually reminds me a lot of "no surprises" by radiohead. they're kinda both about despair and longing, but with a bit of endearing kind of purity about it. she sounds so cute and innocent, it really is a beautiful song. |

the line about the crusade makes me want to throw up. i used to like TSP a lot but evil religious shit like this has completely ruined them for me. Die, ugly bald twat! |

| Pavement – Zurich Is Stained Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
yeah, stop trying to figure out what pavement songs mean. its not gonna happen. you'll just end up sounding stupid. they're meant to be deliberately ambiguous so that everyone can enjoy them. from people with hitler on the brain, to people at the end of a realationship. if you want a laugh, have a look at the idiotic depth of one knob's definitive interpretation of shady lane. |

| Jonathan Richman And The Modern Lovers – Hospital Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| yeah its great. someone told me its about a prostitute, that's why he says he can't stand what she does. i wonder. | |
| The Modern Lovers – Roadrunner Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| that's exactly what i thought when i first heard it! but this song is f#%$n' tops. maybe not as good as sister ray on the whole but its way better value. | |
| Bright Eyes – Classic Cars Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
who says every song he writes is 100% biographically accurate to his own life? it isn't unheard of for song writers to write about a whole a bunch of women melded into one for the purposes of a song, a character in a book or movie, or someone they just made up. i'm not saying that's definately what he's done. i guess it could be about winona or those other people mentioned. its dumb speculating though unless you've got some actual personal knowledge of conner though, cos like some other guy said i'm sure it is fun to lie to rolling stone and shit. i feel certain the last three lines are about not opening up and comitting too early in relationships. the first "chorus" is typical oburst angst about whether or not religion's a crock of shit. |
