It sounds like the Duchamp painting is an important influence. Not knowing the painting, however, I have come up with my own interpretation from the words. I'd be curious to hear how the painting's themes accord with it. Not much has been made here of the contrast inherent in the title. A "bachelor" and a "bride" do not go together. It seems to me that something improper is going on. Let's say we live in a time and place of rigid sexual mores. A married woman is discreetly seduced by a dashing, reckless bachelor. Their powerful, illicit passion brings great joy, but also dire consequences. Upon discovering that she is pregnant, she realizes she must dispose of the fetus before she begins to show, or else fear the wrath of her husband and the judgment of her peers. What's more, she must do it in a manner as illicit as that in which the child was conceived. Hence, a cabin by a river, far from polite society. The bachelor brings her there and makes sure the deed is done (he doesn't want a child, for Christ's sake). But he's not about to sit around like a sap, waiting for her to recover from the trauma. He doesn't handle misfortune well, and she becomes an outlet for his rage--either because she betrayed him by failing to use contraceptives, or because he is ultimately just a thoughtless jerk. Meanwhile, the woman has just experienced the most terrifying event of her life--the death of her unborn child. It is the worst hell she has experienced on earth, and she must recover from it all by herself. In the midst of such an emotionally fraught time, she is likely to remember the smallest details of her surroundings, from the sounds of the rain and the rustling deer, down to what wood the cabin is made of. Tweak a few details, add some of your own for color, toss in some powerful male-female dynamics, and voila! You have yourself an interpretation. |
