This song is somewhat simple but really haunting, about love being strong enough to overcome anything even though the world has gone to hell and life very often just doesn't work out that way. It perfectly fits the heroine character in the movie and the kind of hope she holds onto but I think somehow still sort of conveys the darkness of the story. |

This has been one of my favorite songs for so much of my life, but when I was listening to it the other day I realized I had never even put that much thought into what all of it means before. It used to seem to me that the last part of the song and the rest of it don't have much to do with each other. I had a thought that maybe it's about a guy who is so alone because his drug addiction drove everybody away from him. When someone gets addicted to drugs often it becomes the only thing in their life that is not neglected anymore, and that's what I think the line "forgot about my love" is describing. Maybe he's finally past that really bad part of his life and has gotten clean now, but it went so far that he's been left alone with nothing but "the city of angels," so much that the city is personified as being someone who still cares. When I started looking at the song this way it made it seem much more depressing to me than ever before.
Now that I read in some of the responses here what Anthony has actually said about writing the song, I guess that is somewhat consistent with what I took the lyrics to mean. But it kind of makes me able to look at it more optimistically knowing that when he wrote it it was kind of out of relief that he is past that low point of his life and won't ever have to feel that way again. |
