This is one of their worst songs. JessLovesApril is right, this song does song like the depressed, under-achieving younger brother of "Sultans of Swing." The second album was kind of weak anyways. It seemed like it was just a rehash of the debut album, even the hit single off of it ("Lady Writer") sounded like a second-rate "Sultans of Swing" clone.

I didn't even like the original all that much. "Don't Stand..." and "Dedoodoo dedadada" (or whatever the hell it's called) are the weakest tracks on the Zenyatta Mondatta album and are the only two that I skip through when listening to that album. I don't really like the hits of the Police, I've always liked their non-single album tracks and rarities from the box set more. Songs like "Driven to Tears", "Lowlife", "Visions of the Night", "Next To You", "Too Much Information", "When the World is...", "Omegaman", "Canary in a Coal Mine", etc... are far superior to their hits, imo.

I agree with Rainwalk... it's about a street hustler who'll do whatever he needs to do to survive, but also wants to find a legitimate way to live, but until then he'll live "night by night." My fave song off Pretzel Logic.
