Well, first of all. "One life left to live" is really important in this song. It really is an emphasis on what you want to do with this life. Either live for all that's Material which is exemplified by the Ostentious references to Gold, or Live for Real; meaning living an actual life, devoid of all that's self-glorifying but still meaningful. I.e would you rather the Hawt s3xy girl or your wife? Crazy 1 night stand or Loving marriage? The Old Man is of course, the Tempter, Seducer, as exemplified by Midas, the Lover of Gold, who offers him a choice to live a life so much better than what the persona currently has. One important thing to note is that Golden Eyes are Dead and a Gold Heart can't beat at all, whereas a Real Heart pumps Life through your veins and Lungs find their voice. That's spiritual life for you, the stuff that's inside. You can either choose to be gold/rich on the outside and poor on the inside or vice versa. (Of course it's possible to be rich on both the outside and inside but that's not the norm) And just one more thing to note is "What was once routine was now the perfect joy". I'm not sure but to me it pronounces that longing we have for the "Golden life" enjoyed by celebrities. In a sense, this is also a reminder to enjoy the normal life that we lead, devoid of gold but full of "life". Nonetheless, the gold vs dull thing is not the main point of the song. The persona refrains from judging or explicitly "dissing" or even discussing the pros/cons of living either life. Ultimately, it's about having to choose either gold or dull. |

I disagree with kaos_princess about it being an abusive relationship, it's more like an expression of the irresistable side of love. I'm not going to elaborate on that though, because my main point is to share what I think she means by "fire escape symphony". My impression is that it's a local thing, in the late afternoon at 5pm, with all the neighbours hanging out in their fire escapes, chatting to people from block to block, seeing their kids playing in the alley below, hanging clothes and just generally, a lazy afternoon scene that's cozy in a orange hue. Symphony referring to the cackle or anti-cacophony of the neighbourhood, the comfortable buzz in the air. All in all, a comforting, reassuring imagery pops up when she says "Fire escape symphony" |
