Switchfoot – On Fire Lyrics 18 years ago
*run to my car. looks for the CD case* concedes that the lyrics aren't capitalized. Someone typed the lyrics wrong, but it doesn't change the rest of my argument.

Some people say we're entitled to our own opinions.
If I said, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about following God, or maybe some other cult religion. Yall would call me crazy. Keep in mind not all Christians consider tolerance to be a key virtue, but something within the ideas of love. By that I mean tolerance is only good when used as a tool of love. I tolerate nzhang93 not because it lets me stick my nose in the air, but because I want him to have the right idea about Christ Himself. Sometimes we are told to forget the context and sometimes we are told to adhere to it. Who tells you to adhere and who tells you to forget context? But sometimes people enjoy music by understanding what it means to the writers. Sometimes context is everything this world is missing. Let's use an example. For the context of nzhang93's quote:
"For us, it's a faith, not a genre. We've always been very open and honest about where the songs are coming from" (Boston Globe 1/9/04).

"Beware of the man that says these/those people." I personally try my best not to label people... people that follow a god included. Everyone believes differently. It's not about tolerating difference, but understanding. Christians are called intolerant (even when they're not) only because they can be labeled as Christian because of intolerant ones like me. nzhang93 and alxishess: What makes them special?

Pererixx, I've studied a bit of linguistics. You'll be happy to know words have different meanings, yes. But the usage is supplied by context, contextual arguments were presented in page 2 of the comments as well as all of switchfoots other songs.

Caedmon's Call – Love Is Different Lyrics 18 years ago
it's complexed by the fact that he's a married Christian singing probably to God personified by romance. The band is Caedmon's call, Caedmon, being a monk with no music abilities a long time ago, called to write some of the most amazing songs of his time. The lead is son of a prominent mega-church in Houston.

i agree with Emily. Rain is something good reminding us of something bad. Sometimes we don't want to change and cling to sin, so it takes us through the wash, sometimes we don't want to go.

But the rain comes down anyways. We're dry and cracked refers to being full of sin living empty lives.

the thirstiest grounds are the ones that are most empty, sometimes it takes a second washing. He refers to his heart because it's inside of him cracked, even though he's healed, he's still dried and cracked on the inside, but God pours out his grace again.

I almost agree with PyroPenguin, but "Look what a bomb we made of love" seems to make it seems that we've forgotten all about it, that as Christians our message of love has bombed. (not done well, as in bombing a test)

We've been too wrapped up in the issues to "love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

This applies to our schools too, so I agree but that's not what the song is about. It's about the idea of love to heal the world where we've lost all ties to each other, no real motivation, and such a desperate state:
I have no generation
Shoe me my motivation
One world one desperation
One hope and one salvation

Switchfoot – Adding To The Noise Lyrics 18 years ago
"From the third world to the corporate ear
we are the symphony of modern humanity."
They might not be a Christian genre, but we know who they're callin' out.

Switchfoot – Bomb Lyrics 18 years ago
I like the school message but because switchfoot stays on one subject for the entire song normally, I've been called out to give a more holistic perspective.
I love the bass too. What a way to start a CD

The screaming pages, and the bleeding folder to me are the bible, the bomb for which we were waiting.
Jesus happens to be "only you" to keep us from the emptiness. The blankness happens to be the world, empty -- that the "fluorescent tube" or TV and apathy must be turned from.
The bomb happens to be God that lights the fuse or turns on the light (refering to an inspiration or idea) to share the gospel.

It is about love, a loving perfect God that goes out of His way to speak to us, hold our hand, and arouse us in ways never thought possible.

"Tell you where you need to go
Tell you what you need to leave
Tell you what you need to know
Tell you who you need to be"
He's saying how God is his commander, not how he commands the girl he loves.

Everything inside you know there's more than what you hear
So much more than empty conversation filled with empty words
This doesn't relate to a girl either, esp. one that doesn't follow through.

The words on the page of lyrics in the CD gives more reason to believe that it focuses on God since it capitalizes letters intended for God.

And most guys aren't looking for their girls to be their hope for change.
I have presented logical arguments. Although, we've come to tolerate the fact that your interpretation is not the intent, I don't mind pointing out a fallacies or two to say we tolerate you as a person no matter how wrong your view is, and that we'd love to help you see the song in a different way as well -- as intended.
