Green Day – Basket Case Lyrics 18 years ago
Personally, I like very much the
"I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life's a bore
And quit my whining cause it's bringing her down"
part and I understand as an ironic part of the lyrics about the fact of some people giving the very simplistic answer "Your problem is that you need sex/a girlfriend" in a Freudian explanation, for every individual who suffers from some mental illness or anything that can be anything else than that. It's an irony that the shrink will explain every of your problem with sex but the whore will still not be the cure..

VNV Nation – Nemesis Lyrics 18 years ago
Quite straight forward. Kinda the misanthropic feeling for me in the way I think about misanthropy (ok, I am getting preety bad sometimes that I start hating people and hope something wipes as all ;P). It's about some kind of a wicked justice that comes abroad, like my misanthropic feelings at time, maybe some revenge from nature or space (but it's not mentioned here), not justice from people who can't seem to bring it up, but from an outer source. A Nemesis, a divine retribution, a justice that doesn't come from humans but from the outside, because it doesn't seem to come. Soon enough..

VNV Nation – Further Lyrics 18 years ago
My favorite VNV Nation song. So dark, so feelingful, so.. existential!

It raises both a question about where the mechanism called "humanity" leads us, whether it's positive or not (but who can say what's right or wrong? Nicely put..) and for me there is also a hopefull thought. In these wonderful lyrics:
"The Sun was born, so it shall die.....
...each day shall end as it begins"

It's like it says for me that no matter what, no matter where humanity goes, no matter if there will be destruction, armageddons or the loss of civilization (end of days), maybe that is bound to happen. The sun was born so it shall die. And then the sun rises and dies again. It's like a life cycle, a cycle of our civilization where things must die for a new beginning.

So, it's hopeful that whatever happens in our world, no matter how destructive, it's always a reason for a new beginning and a brighter(?) future. Even though the song is dark and bitter but there is a hidden hope in it I feel. When this song was uploaded in the net you could find it with the title "end of days" which is not the right title. "Further" is how it should be and it fits more the feeling of hope. The title is not focused on "end of days" - destruction/loss, but "further", like saying that things will move further, that's the point, the cycle that brings up a new perhaps better future after each loss..

..is it mixed with a loss of someone you love as several people say? In some of the lyrics in between my favorite parts of the lyrics, it seems like this even though it doesn't make much sense. Anyways,. I like more the existential interpretation even though they could be mixed somehow :P

VNV Nation – Illusion Lyrics 18 years ago
"The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
...
Feeling as though you never belong
....
The world is just illusion trying to change you"

Lovely song. I feel like it talks about people who differ for various reasons and don't fit to social cues but the whole distraction with society this brings up, is bringing them into a state of confusion, mixed feelings, wondering if they have to change or stay the way they always were. It begs them for acceptance of what they are instead of sorrow that kills you because you don't fit in a society that's here to be mean to you. I don't know whether the "please don't go, I beg you to stay" talks about a suicide or another way of leaving reality, though I'll have to think about.
