Elvis Costello – Tears Before Bedtime Lyrics 3 years ago
This is a great one, but I must say, over the many years I've preferred some of the live version of this song, where he changes the pace, puts it more of a minor key, and it becomes an even nastier, more wicked plea.

Even recently he's performed the track to stunning effect. Go check it out on youtube, a performance at the Greek Theater in 2017 is a great example of what I'm talking about.

Tremendous.

Rod Stewart – Gasoline Alley Lyrics 3 years ago
This is one of the more beautiful, haunting ballads from the early 70\'s.The slide, and multiple guitar parts, they integrate so beautifully. Rod\'s voice is staggeringly good here. \n\nThe lyrics fill me with a melancholy and a yearning. Going home, carry me home. Take me back, carry me back. It fills me. \n\nThe final long howl at the end. it never fails to bring a tingle down the length of my spine. It\'s really something else. \n\nThis is a beautiful number. From around 1970 or so, to 1975 or thereabouts, Rod Stewart had one of the greatest careers in the history of rock and roll. Between the solo albums he did for Mercury, and the albums he cut with the Faces, few singers have had a more stand out career. Taken together, it\'s some of the greatest rock music ever made. This track is a prime example of that.

Curtis Mayfield – Give It Up Lyrics 5 years ago
My God what a confounding song! The epic quality of the chorus, "I'm gonna have to give it up!", the music sounds as up this will be an uplifting, joyous emotion; instead, the singer appears to be looking at the woman he's raised a family with and admits that they're not the forever soul mates they thought they'd be.

It's one of those tragic kind of songs. it reminds me in a way of Born in the USA; the music leading you down one path, while the lyrics are a big, BIG fork in the road.

it's the final track on one of the greatest soul albums ever recorded. What a way to go out. It always leaves me feeling enthralled and leery at the same time. I sure would love to ask Curtis what was up with this one.

Liam Gallagher – Once Lyrics 6 years ago
@[goodvibe61:32335] One other thing: the lyric says "her knife edge is waving" and i tried to correct that.

The song does mentions a knife's edge. No kidding. This one does cut deep.

Liam Gallagher – Once Lyrics 6 years ago
Devastating stuff. It just killed me the first time I heard it, and it just gets better and better.

As if the first run through the chorus isn't enough, that second verse is an absolute stunner.

This is an extremely powerful pop record. I have zero problem putting it up there on the same pedestal as some of the other classic Oasis tunes. This one reminds me a great deal of Don't Look Back in Anger.

The emotion shines through here and feels deeply personal, of thoughts of a life scattered with regret and pain. Brilliant.

Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats – Tearing at the Seams Lyrics 7 years ago
The power of this song shocked me the first time I heard it. I mean this thing hit me like a ton of bricks.

There is a world weariness and crystalline clear sense of despair and hope that fill this song to an emotional breaking point. The lyrics are written in a highly poetic, Dylanesque style here, and the music behind the words slowly builds and crescendos until the singer finally snaps with fire and fury, the singer looking back on the life of a long relationship that's come crashing down around him, not of his own choosing.

This is gut bucket soul music of an extremely high caliber. I don't know. It's pretty amazing stuff. For a good example of what I'm saying, watch Daniel's performance of this on Seth Meyers. It's powerful, it's moving, and I practically dread what must be in the mind of the singer as this is pouring out of him.

Elvis Costello – Either Side of the Same Town Lyrics 10 years ago
This is an incredible song by Elvis. There is an undeniable power in the chorus. The tragic verses build into that awe inspiring chorus. The Imposters play this thing just beautifully.

They show Elvis performing this quite often on the Palladia Channel, a live gig called "club date". Watch it and you'll see what I'm talking about. This song just kills. It rips your heart out and shows it to you.

Elvis Costello – Distorted Angel Lyrics 12 years ago
This is one of those songs that is sort of ruined by the production on the record. But to hear Elvis sing it live, it's truly one of the most stunning things I've ever heard.

Listen to the version on the Costello & Nieve Box, it will absolutely destroy you. Haunting, sweet, creepy, with a beauty added by Costello's brilliant voice, the song aches with a pain and love that leave you breathless.

Unfortunately those cheesy keyboards turn the studio version on All This Useless Beauty into a bit of a mess. Pray that some day you get to see Elvis perform it live; when he backs away from the microphone during the unforgettable coda, it will send chills down your spine.

Jack White – I Guess I Should Go To Sleep Lyrics 13 years ago
Another countrified lament about a significant other that can't be pleased?.

"I ain't managed to say the right thing yet..I guess I should go back to bed".
He describes his situation as a "dead end street", and "running too long on an endless street".

Like most Jack White tracks, the music is layered and beautiful. Love the country feel of this, almost vaudevillian in the flavor.
