| The Used – On My Own Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I live in Utah where The Used are from. I've been to Squaw Peak, the place Bert referes to in the song, "See all the people on the ground wasting time...top of the world..." Squaw Peak is at the very top-the peak-of the mountains in Provo, Canyon. It's a beautiful spot and you can see the entire valley. | |

I can completely see what the song is about: his grandfather and his battle with cancer. But the line: "I am the watch you always wear, but you forget to wind..." I can't figure out what it means. When i hear that part, i think of someone who is taking him for granted, but that doesn't seem to fit at all into the song. Any help??? |

In the second verse the time changes and so does the tone signifying a change in point-of-view. The idea that it is the driver singing fits perfectly. This song is filled with so much emotion; specially when Jess sings, "Her signal was interrupted. My baby's frequency not strong enough Her head in my hands and smiling..." I have this mental image of the person singing "the mother" just bawling and filled with such remorse and hate and despair. Such a sad song...i feel immensely for the family who went through this event. I can't even fathom.... |

| Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
When Jess was a boy he used to play basketball with his dad, and when he shot the ball he had his hands in a certain way that he always seemed to block his own shot. So his dad would always say, "you're the boy who blocks his own shot..." hence where the title comes from. This leads me to believe that this song is about his relationship with his father. As far as being "fragile and thin" and "pale" maybe that is refering to his father being older... Just my thoughts |

/"as with most of the songs on this album, i see this song as a vignette. it tells me a story of a predatory stranger possibly abducting a little girl. him leaving tobacco, peppermints and fingerprints in the car as in a crime scene. her, "sucking on your breath mint, dissected and stuck with pins" (killed probably), and of course the smoke (from his tobacco) at the playground and its cold outside, these also set the tone. And then from the mothers point of view (as if to her daughter) "if youre leaving just let me know" and "if your coming home just let me know". of course she leaves without letting her mother know. ("some rules are made with all intentions to break") hence the mother frantically searching the playground in the pouring rain "concrete and water". then later in the song, the mother taking the daughters picture off the wall and out of its frame, overcome by the grief of this tragedy takes her life by jumping out the window."/ MC Legends...i completely agree with you. You too the words RIGHT out of my mouth because this is exactly how i heard it too. :) |

| Come on people...this song is without a doubt about the accident of Katie. Such a depressing song...the image of holding my little girls head in my lap after a tragic accident is heart-wrenching. :'( | |
| Brand New – Limousine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Do you think maybe the little girl on the album cover represents Katie who died in the accident? | |
| Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I just don't understand how this song could be about the camping story. It doesn't really fit together as nicely as the failed love interpretation. I am 99.99% sure this song is about a relationship (most likely a girl he loved) and it ended. It ties in perfectly with the lighthouse "play crack the sky" and having her fail him by not lighting his way. Their relationship failed and died. I think the line "i need you like water in my lungs" signifies that he realizes she's really not good for him and he's going to move on. | |

I completely agree with punkislovetbsbn. I think it is about his relationship with his ex and his best friend John. Cocky? No, i don't think Jess is being cocky at all. Sarcastic? Yes, i hear a hint of sracasim throughout the song. He's got a great way of expressing emotion. Great song. |

I completely agree with the interpretation about this song on the first page. The comment on how he knows God can love her more then he can so he wants her to be with Jesus, hence the whole car crash, yada, yada, yada...it makes sense!!! I cry everytime i hear this song. It's beautiful. :) |

| Brand New – The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I had a completely different interpretation of the song before i saw the video. I don't think the video is actually what it is at face-value. There has got to be some meaning behind it like someone previously said about a marriage gone wrong and relating it to an accident. I love how in the video he stays with her even after he dies. This song really gets to me and i get all choked up...*sniff* I love Brand New |

| Brand New – Last Chance to Lose Your Keys Lyrics | 18 years ago |

What this song about is obvious: it's about a girl who said she loved/liked him and never really did appreciate him. He finally realized after getting his heart broken so many times that he deserved better (I'm better off home on a Saturday night with all my doors locked up tight I won't be thinkin' about you, baby...) and he was going to move on. |

I agree with unrumble25. What the crap is stopthecar TALKING about??? BN has AMAZING songs and Jesse writes BRILLIANT lyrics that are not only "catchy" but deep and profound. But whatever...everyone is entitled to their own opinion...no matter how much it sucks. ^_^ As for my interpretation: I think it's mostly about writing. It's what really makes sense. As far as the other person he is refering to goes, i interpret that the person is his friend or girlfriend and the relationship is strained because he is trying to write and finish the album/songs and he is being really hard on himself. Their drifting apart because he is working so hard and he is concentrating so much that he is becoming distant, and the fact that their relationship is not doing very well is really upseting him but there's not really anything he can do about it until he's finished. Maybe he's so stressed that he's kind of being a jerk to the other person (which i have done before), even when they are trying to help. He knows he's being a jerk, so he feels bad. |

My interpretation of the song is that it's about a girl. I hate thinking that because every song on this album seems to be about "a girl" or "an ex" and BN always throws in other hidden meanings. It almost seems like he is a jealous too...but really frustrated. The only thing that really suggests this song is about a girl is the line: "i got a twenty dollar bill no one has ever seen you without make up" but Jesse is known for his excellent metaphors, so agreeing with natleehunnui, it could be a metaphor for being fake. Other then that, it sounds like it's about a person he was really good friends with and is now completely frustrated with and has drifted apart from. The person he is refering to doesn't appreciate him anymore and maybe he wishes things were the way they used to be in "the summers before [they] got too cool." I sense a little jealousy in the ending line "but i wish you were my shadow." But i also interpret that line that he really misses the way things used to be. It's a great song. I can relate. Brand New rocks! |

| Yeah, why would he say, "Jess i still taste you..." if he was refering to himself? That doesn't make sense. Maybe the girl he's talking about was named Jessica or something like someone else said. | |
