| Emilie Autumn – What If Lyrics | 18 years ago |

You know how most people try to relate songs to their own lives? Well to me i think this is about a parent who thinks their child is something perfect, just what they wanted her to be but then they realize she has a mind of her own although i think deep down they knew that all along but have chose to ignore it- "And you close your eyes when I say I'm breaking free And put your hands over both your ears Because you cannot stand to believe I'm not The perfect girl you thought well what have i got to lose?" So whatever this girl is deep down they don't like it and refuse to accept her for who she is. Or maybe the same scenario but with a lover rather than a parent? |

| I seriously doubt this is the meaning Emilie Autumn would've had in mind when she wrote this song but for me I imagine it to be about a woman who has grown up to be truly unhappy and some may even say mentaly unstable because of something that happened/ that someone did to her when she was younger. Possibly linked to the meaning of "Gothic Lolita"? Maybe. | |

| To me this is a song that can really transport you to another place and makes it easy to empathise with the girl Emilie has written about (The Lady of Shalott) I haven't read the poem yet, but i will do as soon as i find it. Although...I can't help but think some of the lyrics written here are wrong? | |

I agree with a lot of what is written above, as no one other than Emilie herself can say what this song REALLY means, it's open to interpretation. You know this bit: "I don't mind telling you My life was ended by your hand The kind of murder where nobody dies But I don't suppose you'd understand" I think that could mean that whoever did these dispicable things ended the life of the girl in question, but maybe not the physical life but the emotional one hence "the kind of murder where no body dies"...just a thought. I love this song. The noted at the start really create a spooky childish image and it's kinda sad when you think about the whole story. |
