This song gave me huge goose bumps (continuously) after hearing it on Big Love Sunday night. Such an epic song in time for Valentine's Day. My interpretation of the song: she is all consumed in her infatuation with a boy or her lover. The darkness represents the negative side of being in love: jealousy, missing that person, the pain of unrequited love, echoing what Socrates said in "Phadreus," love is akin to insanity. The imagery of the cosmos blanketing her in darkness speaks to the depths of hell and pain she incurs because of this boy. What makes it worse is that the boy has his own turmoil. The falling star from his heart that made her blind makes me think he pursued her and made her fall in love with him. She finds that he is some darkness too, whether it's because of his infatuation with her or other pain he's going through, so she takes the initiative and becomes his savior (making a map from her eyes), and she agrees to be with him (stays in the darkness with him, and stayed in the shadow of his heart). They find solace in each other. |

Not to take away from your interpretation, but almost any song that's written about love for someone else could be attributed to love for God (which is why some bands get labeled Christian rock whether they actively pursued that role or not). I think because the singer emphasizes staying in the darkness makes this contrary to the Christian sense of being brought into the light with God's love. The last verse points to that poignantly--she finds her lover in the darkness too and that's where they stay. |
