The Innocence Mission – I Left The Grounds Lyrics 10 years ago
I think I read something regarding this song reflecting Karen Peris's devastation at losing a baby that she and her husband were trying to have.

Crystal Waters – Makin' Happy Lyrics 13 years ago
These lyrics are missing part of the bridge:
"It's so much better than feeling sad,
there's something harder than being bad"

Personally, for me there has always been something sinister lurking in the lyrics but I can't quite put my finger on it. The mentioning of going too far and her sounding like a mouse (a timid and scared creature) and afterwards she is on the floor as if she collapsed.

Then the next section talks about how the she put up a fight and how the guy just couldn't miss out on any fun and she is scrubbing herself clean in her bathtub.

It almost sounds like date rape to me.

The Magnetic Fields – I Wish I Had an Evil Twin Lyrics 17 years ago
You know, I was listening to the song and I think that the last line might have a double meaning as far as a wish and possibly the wish that any evil he had done in his life could be erased from his conscience. He goes through his list of evil acts and at the end he expresses the wish slightly differently using the past tense and not the present conditional tense. Also, he says that he is basically a good person and it wears thin. Maybe he is saying that when he does evil it bothers him and his past evil acts still prey on him and that an evil twin would help erase the evil within himself. Just a thought.

Goldfrapp – A&E Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics do have a couple of inaccuracies but like Elizabeth Frasier of Cocteau Twins, Goldfrapp has much fun with her lyrics and bending words and sounds. In the lyrics that came with the disc I bought the line
"I'm in a backless dress
on a pastel ward
'The shining'
think I want u still
but it maybe pills at work"
I thought that the shining reference was cool because Lennon used the same idea of 'shining' as a connection in "Instant Karma". Stephen King used that reference for the book title. Maybe she was hoping that the guy would feel her pain and reach out to her finally?

The B-52's – Cake Lyrics 18 years ago
I am with cheeseburgers. The ladies are talking dirty again.

I also love this song and think that the chorus with the horns is one of the best hooks in the B-52's catalogue but unfortunately got stuck on Mesopotamia where it got buried.

The B-52's – 52 Girls Lyrics 18 years ago
I bet if any of us went back to the headlines of when the song was written that we would find all of these women in the news.

They say that these are the principal girls of the USA. I don't know many but I am thinking that Jackie-O of course is Jaqueline Kennedy. Phoebe might be Phoebe Snow a major recording artist who had major hits back then. Gloria could be Gloria Steinam a major feminist. I think that the lyric for Tina, Louise is most likely TinaLouise, the actress who was a major tv presence playing Ginger on "Gilligan's Island". Anita might be Anita Bryant, the former Miss America that spoke out against Gay Rights.

Also, the song says that they were on the beach and in New York. Again, I bet the news from L.A. and N.Y. would give a clue to whom these women are. The last line of can you name them today was probably a challenge to people who had no idea to what was going on in current events.

New Order – Sub-Culture Lyrics 18 years ago
I have to agree with people above. I think that song addresses a man who is living a 'straight' life by day and then going out to the parks at night and dogging or picking a male hooker. Or the refrain could be the point of view of the guy he meets at night and the verses abou the man living the double life.

10,000 Maniacs – These Are Days Lyrics 18 years ago
The building that Natalie Merchant dances on is actually one of the eagle heads that decorate the corners of the Chrysler Building in New York City.

I do love this song but for me there is a bit of sadness to the lyrics, a bit of bittersweetness.

Faithless – Mass Destruction Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the idea that the lines refering to 'stowaway's son' and 'bbc-1' refer to all segments of society.

I do believe thought that the father is a suicide bomber. There is too much finality in his words to his son so he knows he is definitely not coming back. I think that a soldier would give his son hope of his return.
