I think this song has a couple meanings to it. 1. This girl wants to keep up the sexual connection they have after they have ended their "relationship", even though one or both of them realize they don't belong together. He knows it is only time before she moves on too, and doesn't want to remain vulnerable as her lover if he knows they no longer have a relationship. "I'll be pouring tears into your drying eyes" 2. John doesn't believe people should stay friends after being lovers, because after the feelings have been there, we'll want to keep them alive by thinking of the good times, but he wants to move on. "Think we'll never fall into The jealous game The streets will flood With blood of those who felt the same" Perhaps he knows he will become jealous if his future GF still is friends with her former lovers, so that's why he's saying you can only be ONE and he is wanting to live the same as he wants from others. Friends. Lovers. Nothing. "We can really only EVER be one" "So give it up" means he wants her to stop coming back to him, because he understands he is still vulnerable himself and is tempted to hold on to a dying relationship in an empty way. |

He's talking about a few things here. He's saying he's glad he's here in America, its safe, stable, and he enjoys a pretty good standard of living. But he's still not happy, he sees how easy it is to be involved in a cause, and than just abandon it "I used to get annoyed at the fire and the flag, now it just seems old to me (everyone is old to me)" He's tired of caring, because money and special interests dictate agendas, even against a majority of people "lets just drag em all down" where is a hero? But he really doesn't care to the point of making a big deal about those unmentioned wrongs and becoming the hero. "Not that I’m upset I can still make my bet on the basketball game" I really like the rest of the last verse. It is a bunch of rhyming, but each rhyme has a different meaning that is related. Like Whom and Who, the classic technical difference that basically means the same thing. I think it's a metaphor about politics. Republicans vs Democrats, they're all the same! We have a two party system that restricts all others from entering. | Something interesting I picked out in the song thats kinda funny. It seems when we are sober we see heaven as something that is otherworldy and spiritual, but in the song after he's had some wine he sees heaven as something "material" with streets and traffic jams. When in reality we usually have a hard time seeing things real and material when we are drunk. | |

The first impression I get from this song is about how there are people who know everything and have the answers to everyones problems, but then they don't know the answers to their Own problems. "where are you now" There are some answers we can only get from the heavens. These "wisemen" acted like they came down from the "heavens" in terms of them having all the answers, but they just want to have fun and screw around like most humans. So they gave up their "heavenly purity" even with the best of intentions, we always fall back to our humanly instincts which make us human. Just throwing some Ideas out there, take from it what you will. |

What im getting from this song is that its saying bad things happen (people do bad things to each other, or bad things simply happen to us) and the only way to "make it right" is to actaully Try your hardest by "giving all that you can give", taking it seriously, and committing yourself to making it better or making it up. Little monsters (on the table) Crazies here to play Little monsters in the boat parade I think that refers to people who "play games" with other people instea of being serious In relationships those people could be seen as "monsters", and (on the table) means their out there to be dealt with. Notice how he says "baby dust off your knees" I think he is refering this song to a relationship. Hes telling her to stop messing around and try to change her ways. |

To me this song is about someone loving someone and taking every opportunity to save the relationship, when there are just so many problems. This was me in a relationship. Its like he's afraid of moving on, or he is too nice, and as sleepingbutterfly said above, the other person is not reciprocating. "As we roll on tonight" its about taking things one day at a time, he's willng to put work in and fix the problems, and/or it means things are good tonight, because we haven't starting fighting yet and I'm not thinking about the problems with our relationship im just seeing you and i love you. | Ha, vampires...the only thing I could get from that is a metaphore on how some relationships/situations can be draining. Probably "back against the beast" means he has a guilty conscious (he knows what he's doing is bad) but he can't help it. He's cheating on his wife and knows its wrong, but he just wants to get some pleasure. He loves his wife though and doesn't want to break his wife's heart by leaving her. As the song progresses, we find its kinda a repetitive loop. He keeps on saying he will stop cheating but then he doesn't. He keeps going "back against the beast, the delemma he's facing. Its a "note on apathy" because he always comes to the conclusion that he doesn't care enough about his wife to stop. His mistress is "raking" him away from his wife because she is giving him what he needs and wants. "all of my dreams for you to follow" | |
