Metric – The Police and the Private Lyrics 18 years ago
Hang on, this song was written before 9/11!

Anyway, although I love all this talk of metaphor and subtelty, this song is blatently about drugs. It's about seediness, deceit and the irony that Drugs Fund the Government.

I'm very into this theme at the moment as I'm part of a youth movement called "Woodcraft Folk" and the people there are a bunch of hippies and we do all sorts of things to "save the planet", but the majority of them take drugs.

DRUGS FUND WARS!!

Anyway, it's interesting, and even if you don't care what this song is about, it's still beautiful.

Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 18 years ago
I have just read everyone elses comments about this song and am very confused.
The first time I heard it I felt like I knew what it was about, and I can't imagine how it can be interpreted as Russia or Religion.
Regina may have used these symbols subtly, in order to put across feelings of the main theme, LOVE.

I urge you to listen again.

"They made a statue of us, and put it on a moutain top"
This is very self-aggrandising. When you are in love you feel like you are the two most important people in the world.
The people who "give us a talking to" are our parents. Although they have years of experience, Regina doesn't seem to take much notice, as she's so infatuated.
As for "Rummaging for answers in the pages", this may well be the bible, or any other books, but the point is that there is no answer to life, and yet we (as in the "youths") are continually scraping at knowlege, experimenting with new ideas, trying new things. Initially, sex comes to mind, causing the young couple in the song to fly high above their dissapproving elders, above the admiring tourists, and stands them as an imperfect monument up on a mountain top.

My favourite line is "our noses have begun to rust" because of it's humour, it's hints at imperfection, and it's statement that everyone takes life much too seriously.

I love this song, and I feel that it voices exactly how I feel.
If you still feel strongly that it's about something completely different then that's fair enough, and it's wonderful that a simple song like this can mean so much to so many different people.

Regina Spektor – Chemo Limo Lyrics 18 years ago
Regina is so passionate in this song. I wonder where she got her inspiration from, (as I'm pretty sure she doesn't have four kids let alone cancer) but it's so personal it can't have been just something she read about.

This is a strongly political song.
Regina is ironic in the way she puts the human with a gun in their hands on the same power level as the sun. She emphasises the fact that you can get as much comfort and even joy in destruction, but no matter how hard you try, you'll never shoot down the sun.

Brilliant.

Kate Bush – Rocket's Tail Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, Kate Bush is English, so it would make sense.

Overall I agree with solar powered. She finds herself caught up in a moment which she had not expected to enjoy. (Was it me said you were crazy?)
The rocket symbolises the energy but also the vunerability as she launches herself into the unknown.
This is such a lovely song.
