It's not some sort of secret or meant to be anything cryptic. You're possibly the first group of idiots in history who -didn't- know what it was about.

| Elbow – Grounds for Divorce Lyrics
|
The aforementioned "Grounds for Divorce" are not literal, and the narrator of the song could be single or wed for the song to work, his marital status has nothing to do with it.
Grounds for Divorce, as in the COCKTAIL! Did the line about that's what the line "The Anissed Lounge" refers to, a bar. If you didn't see this, you're an oblivious fucking wanker moron.
This song has NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH RELATIONSHIPS. It is not about a wife, a girlfriend or someone a girl whom he loves.
It's about a small group of friends commemorating a recently deceased associate with a toast and fearing that your life could end just as suddenly. The Narrator doesn't lack direction, but knows exactly what he should be doing with his life, but never actually follows that path (Which is EXACTLY what the line with the compass is intended to be about, not a watch, not a clock, nothing to do with TIME) He puts this off knowing that even if he spends his life without making anything of himself, seeding with the regular filth of this underworld of drunkards and nobodies, he will eventually be reunited with his friend in the death, ending exactly as he did, in a hole (the hole in his neighbourhood the song refers to is in reference to the deceased friend's grave, but also to "getting stuck in a hole" or not overcoming something, obviously grief of the friend's departure). The friend who is never named is only referred to as "The Seldom Seen Kid"
"The Seldom Seen Kid" is a nickname you give to somebody you rarely see, but truly enjoy the company of. In this case, it refers to Brian Glancy, with whom the band members used to perform in "The Corner Pin", the pub in Ramsbottom where they got their start. The song is quite literally about the nearly 3 years when the band stopped making music and what they went through with the loss of their friend over that time, eventually reaching finality by getting over their depression and being truly able to celebrate his life, rather than obsess over his death.
This message is not hidden, it is not an in-depth song. It is literal and straight-to-the-point. Those of you who try seeing a deeper meaning in it are the same ones who seem to have NO IDEA what it is about.
Fucking Wankers... |

Agreed. When he sings the song live, it is very easy to hear that it is twenty-six not twenty. I don't know why that's a such a common mistake, because though it is hushed, it is CLEARLY not twenty that he is saying. |

You're a moron.
This song has NOTHING whatsoever to do with Zombies.
The meaning isn't exactly clear, but if you pay attention to the band's work it's not that difficult to understand. The song is about Morasky and Fluttman's experiences with Fluttman's uncle and the stories he used to tell them about his time in Chicago and how he felt after he moved to Florida. Even though he hated it his whole life, he found Florida to be a boring place where he couldn't do anything but sit at home and drink.
The rest of the lyrics are apparently about other stories from their youth.
Zombies, get real.
I'm actually incredibly disgusted that this is their only song on this website and it seems everyone's comments have something to do with Zombies. |

You're a fucking moron, Quickstep. First off, women are the evil ones, that's what the song's about. It's an old IM cover,do you even remember when this came out...or were you born in the MP3 Era? Anyhow. It goes with an accompanying story throughout the album. A boy is born with mystical abilities including clairvoyance as he is to become a great prophet. God sees a great power inside of him for the side of Good and Satan wants this put to an end. When he cannot have the child killed in the womb he continues to scheme. He eventually sends his daughter, a beautiful young girl, to seduce him as a young man. They fall in love but she is destined to remain in Hell. He believes however, in spite of what God may say, that there is always a way to repent and that she can live a good life and be forgiven for her evils. Do your fucking research before you go about with your half-assed theories. |

| The Pogues – Turkish Song Of The Damned Lyrics

This song was recorded for the reasons listed above, but you failed to mention a few parts. The song is borrowed greatly from Celtic Sailor's myth. Throughout such tales there are plenty of stories of [un]dead pirate and sailor captains who are immortal, ever heard the phrase Davy Jones' Locker (which refers to the very bottom of the ocean)...yeah, Jones was Scottish. Anyhow, the debt is collected by a servant, who typically is already dead and carries a "shadow" on their back (Meaning a curse) and is sent to collect the debt from whomever still has not paid, dead or alive. These such stories go back centuries in Celtic mythology as does the "Woman with a comb in her hand" which refers to a Banshee, a type of faerie spirit from Ireland (or sometimes Scotland) who forewarns someone of a death by singing a song of mourning and typically carries a silver comb. |

This song was written in 2006 by Tuomas Holopainen and was sang by Marco Hietala, the bassist, main vocalist and songwriter for the band Tarot. In February 2007, Nightwish received a very talented NEW singer, by the name of Anette Ozlon, so the song was no longer going to appear on Nightwish's next album, Dark Passion Play. The song did however appear on the Amaranth CD single as well as on the Collector's Edition of Dark Passion Play. A reworking of the song was recorded with Anette by the name of "Amaranth" and put onto the general version of Dark Passion Play. This song is actually quite amazing, as is all of Nightwish's material. I especially like the way the hawk cries along with the scream of "REACH" throughout the song. I actually have five versions of Dark Passion Play; The regular version, The Collector's Edition (As to get this song) the "Orchestral" version that comes along with the Collector's Edition, the Japanese release (As to obtain the song "The Escapist") and the "Instrumental" version that comes with the Japanese release (the tracks are exactly the same as the "Orchestral" version) It's cool to look at in my collection because it is five CD's with the same basic image, though all look noticeably different. I was absolutely shocked that this song wasn't on here, especially when the even more obscure "The Escapist" had lyrics. |

Rocky Road To Dublin...That is the title. This song is a famous, traditional song about an Irishman from Connaught (My homeland) who travels to Dublin to find work. The song makes reference to his making of a Shillelagh and crossing the bogs as he leaves. He travels to Mullingar, where the city women are curious (meant as them thinking of him to be cute, adorable) for his accent and clothes, and general actions. They ask him where hs is going and he describes his journey ahead, eventually leaving, feeling he may have been better off settling down there, but is insistent on finishing his journey. He travels to Dublin, a town notorious for residents who hate everyone else, unless they are also from Dublin. He is robbed, on the streets, and when he turns to face his assailant, to beat his face in, the locals are all glaring at him and taunt him for his accent and tell him they insist outsiders leave. he can;t take them all, so he does...he arrives on the port. There he asks if he can travel by ship, to which he is answered no, so he stows away in amid the pigs in the ship's belly, not knowing where he is headed. He arrives in England, and in Liverpool, where the people are notorious for hating the Irish. He is not about to put up with this and when they taunt his homeland in Tuam, a group of young lads overhears this. They are also from Tuam and join him in battle. He is not outnumbered this time, so they naturally won the fight, because we Irish are far too experienced fighters. |

This song is a prayer in Celtic Polytheism (Ancient religion of the Celts) as well as many new-age religions who are greatly wrought from Celtic polytheism, such as Moder Druidism and Wicca. There are so few who practice Celtic Polytheism, that statistics often relate that 0% of the world follows it. I myself, have met one person who practices this religion besides me, the two of us having grown up together. It has always been our religion, though she is a ritualist, a spellcaster, if you will. I on the other hand, I am not. |

I know it's not what it's about and it's actually a lot deeper than the song's intended meaning, but here's how I learned of this song anyway. Well, a certain liberation party, doing their best to save their country from tyranny on a certain Erin's Isle...well, for whatever reasons undisclosed, this song was noted to me because of these people and their cause. It's funny because looking at it now, having not caught the entire song before, EVERY lyric matches the cause and the current conditions perfectly. As for the Ten Thousand Fists, a raised fist is a traditional symbol to these people and is used by the organization endlessly often, which is typically repeated by the locals: men, women and children, all of which understanding the cost of freedom. Kind of brings a tear to your eye when you see it, so many fists that way, later on a friend introduced me to this song. As for Disturbed, not really a fan of theirs, wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them, even for free. |

Dropkick Rover, you're wrong, though your main aspects are right. The song is dedicated to Brian Deneke, who never knew the band. The poor lad got jumped outside an IHOP with his friends. the town's entire Football team showed up and, as Punkpirate said, Brian got run down by Dustin Camp's cadillac, litterally crushing his skull open, then joking about it to Brian's girlfriend. The little bastard got no jail time, until he violated probation, and his fine was payed off by everyone else's charity, because he was an "All-American" kid from the football team. If I ever see something like that I would kill the guilty party, even if I knew I'd be condemned. I am a traditional Irishman, vengeance stands above all but three things, and jocks ain't one of 'em. |

Lansdowne, a place where the jockstars and beauty queens from high school wind up. It's sad but the punk image is looked down upon by the generation before us, but you know you're really good kids at heart, especially compared to these shitty little brats viewed as "All-American" who have to be the first people to get plastered at every party for the attention and popularity. Lansdowne's always a good place for a stroll when you're looking for a fight, then you meet up with your friends on the other side of Fenway. good times. Song's a lot like "The Wreckoning" by Nonpoint. I don't know if any of you were around to remember this, but do a quick web check of Brian Deneke, a very friendly kid who participated in community projects, making tomorrow a better place for children. He happened to be a punk, so he was killed outside an IHOP, when he and his friends tried to back down from the entire football team, only to be run over by Footballer, Dennis Camp's Cadillac, who only laughed and made jokes about and never REALLY got his punishment. This incident is also the message in their other song Fortunes Of War. |

Well, I cannot speak for the song's writer, but I must disagree with you Clubby123. This song does not so much seem like it is about someone selfish who has everything given to him. It seems to be speaking of someone who takes only what he needs, but will not settle with the worst of things. He is emotionless and does not take pity on anyone else, because he already knows that HIS life is difficult enough. He will climb over someone in his way but doesn't do anything for pride or fortunes, as is obvious from the key verses "Don't count the cash because you leave it behind" so he clearly does not consider this important. He is a survivor, in spite of what the world throws at him he grudgingly walks on, undeterred. The song is clearly talking about the kind of person who people would offer to help, but the kind of person who would REFUSE assistance, a sort of pride thing which the band must be familiar with, being Irish and all it's part of their culture. It is better to fail at something than to succeed because another helped you. He may be selfish in a way, but it isn't really clear. the line "You were brought up well" probably does not mean that he had a great childhood, and was likely meaning that he was raised well, not that his lifestyle was well. "We all die alone" is also a motto of mine, and I ain't afraid of death, I actually WELCOME her with open arms. This is what makes me a Dullahan. |

This song reminds me personally of my patch of life so far. Yes, despite my traditionally gruff, laboring workman's image I can dance (traditionally) rather well, but they teach it in school up here. I furthered my learnings in this later on, believe it or not it is sister of martial arts, as anyone who has tried both, they actually aid each other on the field or the floor. Anyhow, What I'm hearing when this song plays, despite seeing quite a many nostalgic images of the people I've set to grains, I notice that (though this may not be an intention) "Learning to dance" sounds like a metaphor. If you've ever been to Quincy you may see it too. |

This song is about people who go to any extent to make themselves popular. I know many like this, I sent more than a few of them to the hospital before I even made it into High school and even more since graduating. I work with a lad like this, 22 years old. He wouldn't mind getting his arse handed to him if it means that people are talking about him the next day. He went home from work early the other day because his stomach hurt. Six days later when he finally came back he tried passing it out as "I got locked up" and got on the defensive when I told him I wouldn't stay late for him "Because my stomach hurt" and everyone caught on. He's the first to pull the "What, you wanna fight?" when he fucks up and needs a distraction so you don't catch it, last time I kinds turned around "Well... Yes actually" and he took off. Anyhow it's about those kinds of people, the kind of people who go through anything for their image, not caring who they step on and climb over to get it, it's when those people they see "beneath them" rebel and tear them down, throwing them to the floor that it hits them, they've fucked up worse than before, people are hating them as much as others are loving them and their "friends" ain't about to step up and defend them. This is exemplified once again by Ajay Patel, who got his arse kicked when his "Best Friend" couldn't step into the fight until he returned to the car to hide his iPhone... Yeah, this song's about you Patel...The only man I've ever seen shirts for sale reading '[YOUR NAME HERE] CAN KISS MY ASS' |

Only those faking their residency in the countries attempt apologies for their English...what is that saying about the lot of you? I only heard this song recently, but from what I hear it is relatively old, especially since there are so many posts on this song here. Some friends told me to listen to this and they later played it on their car stereo for me. They told me that I was the one who the battles always chose and it made them feel bad for me. At the same time the part where it says "I don't know what's worth fighting for, I don't know why I scream. I don't know why I instegate and say what I don't mean." is another line that they said describes me well, I've basically said things of this same meaning before. That is why the song "Dunce" by Voltaire is somewhat what this song reminds me of, or at least that part. They all know that I tend to say things that I don't really mean "Keeping yourself distant from others because you think you'll hurt them" is what they say. Anyhow, I cannot say that I hate this song and I seem to listen to it every time I hear it. I suppose it just brings the past back. I'm sorry, that isn't really what the song is about but that is basically what it means to me. I have friends who truly do care about me, despite what I've done. |

True, that is an odd coincidence Dropkick_Rover. Anyhow, This song is about Finn (Fionn, etc) Maccumhail (McCool, etc) and his troop of brigands. Anyhow, BAck to Rover's point, my name is also of celtic mythology (Didn't want to confuse the yanks by spelling it Dubhlachan) but Saint Patrick, on an unrelated note, is the most anti-Irish figure that the world has ever seen. He drove "The Snakes" from Ireland. As any historian 'ould tell you, "The Snakes" is just a metaphor, it really means those of Celtic religion, hence, the Celts, hence The Irish. He Drove the Irish from Ireland. Too bad I can't go back to then, I'd kill him, even if they executed me afterwards. Then maybe more people would practice my religion. The small solace in this is that the religion has never faded, at no point in history since its creation has it had no followers. The survivors who did not eventually convert to Catholicism taught it to their children and so, on. There are still some families today who practice this religion, in direct teaching from the ancients and there are many people who have converted to new age versions of it, Wicca, modern Druidism, etc, etc and one day the religion may be full again, but only if the lessons are taught on after the endless controversy and struggle of Celts who are outnumbered by Christians. Anyhow, that is the message that this song speaks. |

What I have seen in this song is that basically every line relates to Celtic Mythology. Some are more loose, such as reading the signs or the full moon's glow stealing the light. Technically those could be related to other things. Then there are terms like "Headless Horseman" which is just another name for the Dubhlachan (Dullahan), who was created by Crom to hunt down select people (Catholics) in Ireland. Crom is mentioned himself, Crom's name means "The Dark One" or "The Dark Bent One". Banshees are harbringers, messangers of death from Celtic Folklore. The line "The Gods have now been swayed" is also specific in Celtic Mythology. The lable "Demon of Destruction" was a common term for The Morrigan among crusaders. This may not have been the intention, perhaps he was just specifically liking of celtic folklore, but the song actually makes sense in celtic religious belief. That is one of the reasons that I am so fodn of it. Anyhow, the Celtic influence in the song cannot be denied. |

You forgot the word "Right" at the beginning of the sing. That is the only really bad mistake that no one has corrected already. this song is referring to the night as a person, a lady at that (The night is a lady) and it tells what it is like to spend time with the night. the line "Mother always warned me such, being a nocternal soul, besides just being simply strange, spawns from some illness of the mind" is very personally true. My mother began telling me that when I was about five or so and I would slip out the dorr into the forests and remain there until rather early in the morning. Perhaps she was simply afraid that the wolves would eat me but she truly did think I was crazy and that I was genuinely odd. Then again, everyone who knows me tells me those things... |

Spot on, ThePokeDuck. That is what that line means. The song is about a self-righteous man who goes through life passing himself off as whatever he can only to serve himself. Making himself look better or getting what he wants. Stealing money or medicine and lying a bout who he is to sound important "The lives that he's saved". The chorus is not about suicide. When he dies he goes to heaven to be judged and Saint Peter lockes him out of the pearly gates. When he tries to bribe his way in he is cast to hell where he meets Satan, the only man to truly know him well. Satan has reserved a special place just for him. |
