Weezer – The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn) Lyrics 17 years ago
thewordofrashi hit the nail on the head. not that i think it's better than bohemian rhapsody, but this song is so reminiscent of it, just with new, modern life breathed into it. awesome.

i'll accept that it's about someone in particular, but i also think there's something in that loss of innocence/ childhood thing that DIYdamage mentioned ... especially in "Blow my bubbles with nicotine gum" - complete dichotomy of childhood vs adulthood, a smoker blowing bubbles.

Yeahh I meant I can't believe nobody added it earlier and talked about it, esp. since its so old. Probably because we can't decipher what he's saying hahaha.

BUT!! I didn't even think of it like you described. I wish I knew all the damn words though. But interesting points.

This song is so intruiging.

Motion City Soundtrack – The Future Freaks Me Out Lyrics 18 years ago
Errr . . . I think people are delving a little too deep into this. Which is easy to do with Justin's lyrics, but at the same time, it's kind of a what you hear is what you get factor. I think it's just about growing up, about spending your days wasted away with your friends, most often one specific friend, and just growing up together. That's what's with all the pop culture references. I'm sure everyone can relate to this. Some seem to live vicariously through pop culture which I think is an element in this song.

I don't quite know that it's actually a love song. Sometimes I think yes, and other times I think it's just about life. It's about time and growth and generations. It's not specifically saying anything about a certain generation, as some people believe, like he wishes he was from a different era or something. I think he just does what he likes, watches what he wants, listens to what he pleases, all for him. It's not so much making a statement about "kids these days" or something. Justin's lyrics are all very representational of HIMSELF. He rarely makes speculations about humanity in general.

It's just a really fun song, though QUITE depressing when you actually listen to the lyrics. It's the embodiment of a confused, fucked up kid, and I think Justin still has that sort of mentality, he's in a similar mindset, and it comes out in his lyrics. I can't quite describe everything I want to say, because MCS's music ... you either REALLY RELATE and know that its a true connection that can't be described, or you don't, which is fine. It's a personal thing.

Motion City Soundtrack – Intersection Lyrics 18 years ago
Okay I love this song and I can't believe in all these years nobody's commented on it. Probably because a lot of the lyrics are inaudible. Anyways, I've been listening to it a lot lately because I have no clue what it's about, and I've formed a theory.

I think it MIGHT in some strange way have something to do with suicide or harming oneself. It's pretty much a longshot, but after analyzing it, that's the feeling it gave me. Most specifically, phrases like "Don't face the mirror" (when you're doing whatever), "For today I should have followed suit, for tomorrow never comes". And then I thought some more about it, and it seems like ... all the years have built up to this one particular moment? There's some looking back, it seems, "Intersection happened years ago", "Back from tomorrow, from today", and the seven leaves from seven trees thing gives me the sense of time passing for some reason.

This thought isn't completely refined, but other ideas would be greatly appreciated. This song intrigues me intensely for some reason. I'm also 99% sure nobody will post haha.

Josh suggested they write a political song, but Justin felt the band didn't stand for anything politically as a group, so instead he wrote his own version of political, as someone stated above, from an apathetic point of view. He didn't want for it to be taken too heavy-handedly. He said it was a "laundry list of things" that bother him to a certain degree that nobody really does anything about, and why not? And at shows, before/after the song, he mentions that it's always better to DO than to sit and sing about something. I guess it's just about standing up for what you believe in and not just sitting back and accepting, which is what everyone, he included, does.

suicide make a meal for birds - someone asked about this. i interpreted it as kind of a figure of speech. meal for birds, who are tiny little nothing creatures, meaning the issue of suicide is something birds can take in his world, but in our world it's this huge, horrible issue. just saying he's more bad ass lol and suicide in his world is pussy shit. i dont know. (can i curse on here?)

Motion City Soundtrack – Together We'll Ring in the New Year Lyrics 18 years ago
haha i hate to break it to you.. college doesn't make it better.

i think the song's about how no matter how you might try to change your antisocial ways it doesn't work, and maybe you have them for a reason. a part of you wants to be able to fit in normally with everyone else, but the bigger part knows that maybe you DONT want that. however, it's also the same thing that's making you miserable. how pathetic it is to want to sit at home, not talk to anyone, and be horribly lonely ON PURPOSE, and to bask in your loneliness. well that's just the thing, it's only pathetic to people who don't feel that way. i am not one of those people haha. i totally understand. on the one hand people are ok, on the other i feel just so distant and i know that's my own doing and i don't know if its right or wrong. and i think that's what justin was trying to eloquate.. is that a word? whatever i'm using it.

Motion City Soundtrack – Autographs & Apologies Lyrics 18 years ago
i think it's about everything, just life in general. the struggle and the things you go through just to keep living, when everything is kind of just a lie. we do things we don't want to do solely because they're what we're SUPPOSED to do.

outline of a story board with no idea - you know when you've come to the point when you've said everything you could possibly say, but it still doesn't describe how you think and feel? language, art, music, any given outlet can only go so far? he can't get down what he wants to because he doesn't know how, and maybe there's no way to and he knows this. completely engulfed in thoughts, but the page is still blank. that's how i see it.

i apologize if i do not care - it's gotten to the point that he no longer cares how he's "supposed" to act or what he's "supposed" to do, he's sick of the outside world dictating what his life should be.

busy hands keep swimming & on - once you get sucked in to the monotony of working every day and constantly having to go through a mundane routine minute after minute, you realize that's what the rest of your life will be. i mean, we're all basically working right now, not just career-wise but working at life, just to KEEP working for the REST of our lives. and if you stop, if you stop trying to better yourself or stop trying to fit into what society expects you to be, everyone looks down on you, so you gotta make that motor hum, even if it's not what you want to do. forward seems like forever . . . when you're working at this day after day, and what you're doing right now is what the future is going to bring you, and that's all there is out there for you, the tiniest amount of time can seem like an eternity. it seems like it will never stop. and it won't.

so much for the autographs, so much for apologies, so much for the promises i never intended to keep - fame has not made him happy, recognition means nothing, maybe he's made mistakes that he's not sorry for but was forced to apologize because that's the right way to act. promises he never intended to keep - he's said things he didn't mean, maybe about the path his life is taking, and felt in his heart he would never "sell out" (not in music-industry terms, what i mean is through letting go of your ideals to conform to what you're supposed to be) but in the end had to.

Very I'm so friendly, very I'm so Halloween - definitely one of my favorite lyrics of all time. It's all about the surface. The social hellos and goodbyes, how are yous, getting along with everyone because one of the responsibilities of living in this world is being friendly to the people around you, and one of the responsibilities of being in such an industry means kissing ass basically. but the halloween reference - on halloween you hide your true self. you become something totally different, maybe something you want to me, maybe something you feel would be fun to be. but it's NOT you under the surface. saying he's halloween is saying that every day of his life he puts on an act and he knows he's not portraying his true self to the outer world, but knows that he can't.

So this is what I wanted? - why do people strive for the expected dreams of "happiness", which in society's terms mean lots of money, a hot spouse, family dinners, and a white picket fence? Isn't there more? To escape, he might turn to alcohol, drugs, any means of stepping out of yourself and out of the world, but all secretly.

I'm drowning by numbers - I took it as like "Color By Numbers". When the colors you use are dictated by what's written, the same way the laws of life are dictated by what society says, and it's teaching him how to drown, waste away into unhappiness and discontent.

My halo is bent, it's a fat fucking lie - The image he lets on to others of what he is is completely false. He's not who people think, he's not the great, charismatic, friendly guy that he lets on. He's much deeper than that, but considering the way people are, you can't really be deep because you'll be completely misunderstood.

Basically it's about the false hopes of life and the reality that it's all a waste of time if you're not doing what you want to be doing, and if you allow what other people think change the way you live. to me, that is. of course that may all be bullshit, but that's what i take from it.
