Emilie Autumn – Misery Loves Company Lyrics 18 years ago
My thoughts:

- Girl gets dumped by the most amazing person she's ever met.

- Is trying to convince herself that she doesn't give a damn, never gave a damn, it'll pass and life will go on. She's been through this before and another break up is just a little bit more pain, heartache, jaded-ness, bitterness, loss of faith, getting screwed over again, etc.

- Is pissed about how it went down. Obviously, he did something to offend or hurt her to the extreme ('Did you plan this all along? Did you care if it was wrong?' 'I'll kill you first, you wait and see, you devil under cover, you're not a prince, you're not a friend, you're just a child, and in the end you're one more selfish lover.') -- And she saw it as a great betrayal.

Hehe~ ) -- then, I'm thinking... When you eat an orange, you leave behind the rind. A relationship might start off full and well-rounded and everything else orange-y you can think of, but if it gets eaten up by guilt or anger or whatever all else, you'd be stuck with a broken relationship. A memory. A skeleton. A rind. And -- assuming the singer is pining about remaining willing to pursue a relationship with the other person, he would "choke on the rinds" -- whatever shit was left after the last "fight" or "break up," he would deal with it and put it behind him to love her. The best I can do with "the lack thereof would leave me empty inside" -- what would you be without your mistakes and bad memories? :3 A person becomes multi-faceted with their mistakes and shortcomings. He might be saying something about having a few healthy problems with a relationship rather than have a very unhealthy, "perfect" relationship. Does that make sense? x3 I'm brainstorming~

You answered yourself about the swallowing doubt bit -- he was speaking figuratively, of course -- he wants to eliminate his doubt. As for the other bit you brought up connected to this lyric -- if you're in a shaky relationship, you can put aside your doubts and pride, but a cynical part of you is still braced for a fall out. Therefore, he would find the ability to have faith in what that cynical part of him believes to be pointless.

Sooooo~ :3 Those are my ideas. What do you have against this song, anyway? x3

Hehe~ x3 My impression of the song isn't that it's about a break up, actually. :3 It sounds to me like the singer (or the person the singer is 'speaking' for) is talking about being in a relationship that's really almost unhealthy, but sort of to the point of being an addiction.

The singer is in a relationship where he is sort of taken advantage of and beaten up emotionally -- feeding his lover's ego. But the singer doesn't NEED the lover -- it's actually vice versa. However, the singer is so in love that even though he recognizes and acknowledges the position he's in -- and what a dumbass his lover is, all he can do is be frustrated and convince himself he'll end the relationship, but he can't do it -- because he sort of enjoys it, and would sacrifice everything for the relationship to work out. It makes him sick, but he loves being almost dependent on this other person.

That's how I interpreted it, anyhow~ x3 To each his own~ :3 I would present evidence in the lyrics, but this is a really long comment already~ x3
