song fuck rocks. so awesome. i can't be bothered to bicker about indie pedigree within an hour of hearing this song.
"soforth" and "jesus kong" are spot on with their interpretations.
when i first heard this song what jumped out was "david bowie" + "and let you keep on living". he says the latter with such a haunting reluctance/inevitability. damn. once if figured out the context it only became better. love the emphasis on "stupid". what a goddamn stupid thing it is to love. but we still do the stupid thing. |

yah, beeman, your's isn't just an "interesting interpretation"--it's definitely what guthrie had in mind, and it's not very hidden. guthrie often wrote about the dust bowl and depression-era issues, california was supposed to be the promised land for any poor person in the mid-west, it's certainly not an accident. the california stars as a quilt pattern does make a cool double meaning, too. |

yah, i was thinking joni mitchell, too. possibly relating to those down feelings expressed on "Blue" leaving the "youth" and "high ideals" of the 60's? i couldn't help but think of her with all the references to trees and dreams... |

| The Clash – Something About England Lyrics

i feel like this is one of the most important songs the clash did. maybe not the best, but it absolutely shows where the entire punk phenomenon came from--the ruin of Britain after the war, and the subsequent failure to create opportunities for the following generations. not to mention the way the song shows the true effects of war on individual families. brilliant. |
