The Wrens – This Boy Is Exhausted Lyrics 18 years ago
I got this album while working in Afghanistan and this song was a stand-out musically, but no more.

I am now back in London and running around Battersea Park every morning and (being the idiot I am) the only line I've ever remembered is the song title. It is the best song to end a run to; he is both exhausted and excited.

'go figure' as they say...

Leonard Cohen – Tower of Song Lyrics 18 years ago
I always found it helpful to take a slighty sci-fi, Stephen King look at this song. If you imagine that there really is a Tower of Song, and that is a lonely, bleak edifice in the middle of a desert it seems to make sense. Yes, old steam trains come and go through the Tower's station and the residents have old radios that they can listen to and broadcast on, but essentially it is a building where old poets and singers go to either see out the end of their days or address the feelings of angst and curiosity they may have.

Alternatively, it's just Leonard Cohen picking out a wonderful off-beat melody, writing some excellent lines of nonsense and just demonstrating how a master can rule with the simplest of compositions (c.f Fog (again) [live] by Radiohead or Into my Arms by Nick Cave etc, etc.)

Longwave – There's A Fire Lyrics 18 years ago
Maybe 7/11?

It seems to be about unity under adversity; in the dark and when things are going wrong, those aspects of society that often cause splits are forgotten or (maybe more importantly) not immediatly obvious.

I do think it is a song about trying times, but that under such circumstances people will behave in a fundamentally decent manner. This applies to group situations (such as in NYC) and also in smaller ways where disparate people will find a common strength in the face of adversity.

Or it could be about dogs with very shiny teeth running around during a power failure....!?

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with all the points above, but with one crucial difference. He is imagining that he is at the 'pearly gates'. but is inspired to do so not because he is feeling depressed or sad but because 'Because I know today has been the most perfect day I've ever seen'

I have enjoyed Radiohead since I saw the video for Creep while staying in L.A. in 1993 and I am continually confronted by people who think they are depressing. They may be morbid. They may dwell on the negative impact humans have, but I maintain that they ultimately find solace and joy in close personal relationships and unconditional love.

So, to re-iterate; this is a song prompting a person who is generally only articulate about negative feelings to take a moment that has seen them realise the joy someone else brings them and take that and express their happiness and appreciation the best way they know how.

Or something...
