| Jerry Cantrell – Cut You In Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Its definitely criticizing Layne for his behavior, and its no wonder Layne didn't consider his bandmates his friends anymore. I am not saying I wouldn't be frustrated with him as well, but considering that Jerry wrote "Would?" about not judging Andy Wood after his death, he's kind of being an asshole here. | |

DressedtoDepress is right. Although I don't think this should have been on "Nothing Safe" (they left out a lot of good songs, like "Heaven Beside You"), it was an unexpected little interlude to a brilliant album. I miss Alice a lot. Although I was very much into grunge when they were around, I was a huge Nirvana fan, so I wasn't ready to really appreciate AiC for the unique band that they are/were. RIP Layne. |

Like all of "Facelift", you may not know what to make of this when you first hear it, but it grows on you. I love this song, and AiC will always be the best band ever to me. The lyrics are about wanting to be normal and the desire to "bleed the freak" out of yourself. Brilliant, but underrated song. |

"Layne Staley>Chris Cornell" Amen. Aside from "Fell on Black Days", Soundgarden is an insult to grunge. "I'm pretty sure he says "told you" instead of "toll due", among other things" I won a copy of "Dirt", hold on, I'll check. It really is "Toll Due", its in the booklet, although it does sound like "Told you". I love this song, although it sounds more like a song from "Facelift" than the heavy grunge of "Dirt". The lyrics are about coming to grips with your mortality and realizing that one day, you just be a "big old pile of them bones", like everything else. This song is also in Guitar Hero II as well as San Andreas, and this has started a new appreciation for AiC and this song. A little known fact is that this song as well as "Angry Chair" have also been sampled in "Doom II". Play levels "Barrels of Fun" and "Blood Falls" respectively and see for yourself. I guess I really am old if I remember this game, but I also remember when "Again" was played extensively on MTV and the radio, so take that. |

| Alice in Chains – Man In The Box Lyrics | 18 years ago |

The last poster is part right. In an interview, Layne stated that the lyrics are about censorship in the media, but he was also stoned (as surge mentioned) when he wrote them. Jerry stated that it was inspired by a conversation he and Layne had with vegans about the treatment of veal calves (they are kept in a box to limit their movement, which keeps their meat tender, this was noted by onelokitty before). Perhaps the thought of being kept in a box inspired Layne somehow, but some of the lyrics are consistent with censorship. This song's lyrics are some of AiC's most ambiguous, as well as most badass (in my opinion). Probably my favorite song of all time, its my ringtone and whenever someone hears it, they usually go "Thats a good song", though I doubt many people know its the same band that did "Heaven Beside You". Sad. |
