The Libertines – Tell The King Lyrics 18 years ago
I've no idea what this song is about and wouldn't even like to hazard a guess, but it's so brilliant and one of my fave Libs songs - I love the way the lead guitar bounces along with the vocals during the verses, great musicianship, great band.

The Libertines – What A Waster Lyrics 18 years ago
Two bob = 10pence, if you describe someone as "two-bob" it means they are nothing, small time, a nobody. "Two-bob cunt" is a common insult in London (well - round my way in east London anyway). A spiv is like a charlatan, an Arthur Daley type character. This song was written as a warning by Pete & Carl to themselves of what not to become - as far as I know.

The Libertines – What Katie Did Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is written about the Libs manager, the woman who got them signed and established and after she'd gone things were on a downward spiral("since you said goodbye...."). Mrs Brown is a euthamism for heroin. Pete wrote it for Carl to sing as a present or peace-offering I think. It's definitely not about Moss, I dont know when it was written, but the album it is on was released Aug'04, and Pete didn't meet her until early 2005 - the whole 'Katie' thing is just a coincidence that people seem to read too much into.

The Libertines – Death On The Stairs Lyrics 18 years ago
Carl once said to Pete "its either the top of the world or the bottom of the canal" - he had a big fear of wasting his life and ending up eating cold beans out of a tin and watching daytime telly on a fuzzy TV - they grew to call this concept 'death on the stairs' - the miserable state that some people become, and thats what this song is about.

It's one of my fave Libs tracks, but the newer version that comes with the 'Dont Look Back Into the Sun' single is awesome - far better than the original.

The Libertines – Can't Stand Me Now Lyrics 19 years ago
The lyrics to this song are so clever and honest in the context of Pete&Carls relationship.

"An ending fitting for the start" is the START of the second album, but also the ending of the Libertines, Pete's "light fingers" threw the dark when he robbed Carls gaff, but the conversational style is great with the way Pete argues back about being shut out and blaming it on the brown, and on it goes, anyone who loves this band and knows their story will appreciate the genius of these lyrics, plus it's a brilliant tune.

The Libs were the best Brit band since the Smiths and Carl & Pete the best songwriting duo since Morrissey/Marr, they good on their own but exceptional together, would be great if they could get it back together but think things have moved on too far now, especially with Pete and the whole Kate Moss scene, shame really but we live in hope!
