Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics 18 years ago

It's a good start, but it all really depends, though, on how you view the war. Many others have said Great Satan is often used as a nickname for America. And "When The President Talks to God"/"Let's Not Shit Ourselves" is a pretty good indicator that Conor Oberst dislikes Bush, probably as much as Win Butler hates Joe Simpson. I think that if you want to make it about Iraq, which you could very well do, that America could very well be Great Satan.

Not to get obnoxious and political, but should we have ever intervened in the first place? No. But we can't leave now because without us there, Iraq would likely collapse just like Germany did after World War I, and that would leave room for a dictator like Hitler to rise up. I'm not kidding. That's like the Whore of Babylon caving under pressure, without support.

I'd like to think it's not about the war, though, this song. It's likely just about changes. Just listen to Conor's voice, the tone of the band's music...it's a new sound for Bright Eyes. It's folky, and Conor has lost his tremble and gained a sort of vibrato. Conor Oberst is grown up now, kids. It's a new beginning.
