I think this song is more about Adam and Eve than ordinary young people. "The second in the garden" refers to when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. I can't figure out what the hunter part is about. Probably where M. Ward really puts his own spin on things, instead of referring to things in the Bible. |

Ah, paintings! Maybe it is. I had a hard time making that word out and started to think it was a random last name, like her brother watched a family burn in a fire or something. I think until I hear different, I'll change it to "paintings". As for meaning, Alela described it on Daytrotter as "a song about a dream that took place in the house I grew up in. My parents had recently sold the house and the song is about letting go of that place and that time. It is a loss of home song" |

At the beginning of the song Jack is untrusting of people (or fans) and does what he can to get them away. He gets bashed for it because he's famous and apparently that means he needs to be a saint. No one cares that the people were being stupid to begin with. Then he tries to please them and gets shot for it. I usually don't care for bands doing songs about being famous, but The White Stripes do it in a fun, creative way, so I don't mind. |

After listening to "Emily" far too many times I looked up Hydrocephalitic in the dictionary and found the following definition: "A usually congenital condition in which an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the cerebral ventricles causes enlargement of the skull and compression of the brain, destroying much of the neural tissue." I marvel at how Joanna A) even knows what that is and (I sure didn't) and B) can actually use it in a song and it be perfect. |
