The invisible friend is the savior mentioned in the song before. The dichotomy between the two songs (calling him a traitor vs. friend) reflects the name of the album: Friend and Foe. The title reflects the whole album's message: a struggle with understanding life and understanding god. A "machine" is: "any mechanical or electrical device that transmits or modifies energy to perform or assist in the performance of human tasks". Being a machine is a metaphor for submitting to the will of his savior and act on behalf of him. By being a machine or tool of his savior, he gains meaning ("to be wanted, to be useful") |

Great song. It is definitely intimate, but by no means sexual (at least i see no evidence for it). Based on the lyrics and the video and the context within the other songs, I think this is about diving in and taking action, of making strides, of taking risks. Taking risks requires faith, the faith to act even in the face of death (as the video demonstrates). |

Overall, this is the most beautiful compilation I've heard of a person's struggle with finding meaning in life. The album captures the ups and downs, the turns to both belief and disbelief, the feelings of jubilation and of discord. It strikes a cord with me because I've fought these same battles. You may not be following his same path but you could learn a lot from these musings and struggles. |

the album has a theme throughout, its a wrestling with the understanding of life and religion. i'll go out on a limb here and call it christianity, considering that's a theme that Danny Seim has discussed on other albums. Its also fairly apparent with the language used (notice the "christian advertisements" on many of the song lyric pages) The first song mentions if "Jesus could only wash my feet". Jesus washed his disciples feet (who later became the apostles). Jesus did this as an example, to show that even great people must respect and serve others. The song is talks about how meaningless life is when you live it for indulging yourself and not serving others. Within the songs in the middle, he wrestles with his faith. The Pelican is a symbol for the the passion of jesus (look it up on wikipedia), the song is about how it continues to come to him even when he fights back. Boyscout'n is the doubt that comes when things are not going well. He feels rejected by Jesus because not everything is going as he planned. Evil Bee is about his walk with Jesus. "My whole world is your property". This line shows how a relationship with Jesus is like a marriage, everything is shared. This last song says "Honey this will be your future you should care enough to carve your heart into a tree initial it with someone special" He is saying to initial it with the "invisible friend" he mentioned in Evil Bee: Jesus (so the initals would be JC). And by "future" he means future... literally forever. Everyone is searching for meaning, few people have found it. Why not follow someone who found it? (hint: not me, not this artist, but someone who millions have followed) |
