I think Subtle appear to be decribing through a lengthy metaphor an arrogant (and rich) person who thinks that they are so great and so smart that they no longer need anyone else. The narrator, speaking to this person, tells them they could float away on a raft in the ocean, countering the old John Donne statement which is the song's title. This person could embark to float forever by themselves where they could forget everything and everyone, even "tipping [the raft] if a rescue plane coasts overhead". However, they would literally eventually die ("heaven . . . eating you up . . . loving your nature to death") and while dying would come to regret their decision. Through this metaphor, Subtle affirm the old adage, as it would be akin to self-torture to never again talk to or make contact with anyone, no matter how bad you're feeling. As you can tell from this lengthy statement, I really really like this song. |
