sorry for the third comment, this is the last :P I also don't believe that the love spoke of in the song is superficial in any way.. I do think that genuinely they had something passionate (even though there are references to "i loved you for your beauty" and all..but I do believe that their love was genuine and it was more than just materialism or superficial physical attractions. One minute, everything is crazy and great, like at a great night at a bar, everyones dancing and having a great time..and the next everything is died out and there's nothing left..the same bar is left slow with nothing really happening. |

It also just reminds me of a personal experience...I used to go to musical festivals a lot as a teenager and once I met a guy over the weekend, mushrooms acid, great times, happy people, sublime fiddling, the whole thing :P I really did leave that weekend thinking that our love was blessed and that I had really found something..Of course, this wasn't the case. It was hard for me to accept at first..that I could go back to this same place I had once felt love and spirituality and such lust before to only feel sorrow. For me this song brings a feeling of beautiful sadness. I can relate for sure. |

Maybe I am just a hopeless romantic..but the end of the world never occured to me.. The very first scenario; the cider laced with acid and all the happy faces and the angel of compassion and all the vivid imagery used here describes the "blessed" love that he mentions later. "And I loved you when our love was blessed And I love you now there's nothing left But sorrow and a sense of overtime" The later scenario; the companion being 100 but wearing something tight, the place being dead, just shows the aftermath after the "winds of change" have hit them. |

| Leonard Cohen – So Long, Marianne Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think that the name change reference refers to her getting married because he says "I see youve gone and changed your name again And just when I climbed this whole mountainside To wash my eyelids in the rain." The verses leading up to this particular one trace his draw to her (before i let you take me home), her power over him (but you make me forget so very much) to the bitter feeling of being alone yet still being stuck to her (Im standing on a ledge and your fine spider web/Is fastening my ankle to a stone.) So if "I see you've gone and changed your name again" refers to marriage, this means that she is finally completely lost from him. "And just when I climbed this whole mountain to wash my eyelids in the rain" The mountain being her or ,perhaps, his love for her when he thought his sorrow would be over. So, in a way, I think in the end he *not necessarily Leonard Cohen, but the narrator if you will* is betrayed by Marianne. It is a battle of strong love, sorrow, and finally, just as he has seemed to finally reach her, she "goes and changes her name again" |

| David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The first verse "It's a god-awful small affair To the girl with the mousy hair But her mummy is yelling, "No!" And her daddy has told her to go But her friend is nowhere to be seen Now she walks through her sunken dream" seems, to me, to be talking about a girl in a relationship that may have broken her home life...her parents don't approve and her daddy has told her to leave and now the person in which the affair was formed is no where to be found..so it describes a personal hardship. Then the second verse talks about the hardships of the world in general..I really like the line " It's on America's tortured brow That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow" All these hardships, or rather, all of the experiences one has to go through in life which ends up hardening you, make life seem to run on repeat, like a film one has seen too many times. When you feel like you've been stuck on repeat and all the ugliness in life is apparent, it's logical to wander about a different sort of life..doing different things or living somewhere else. Is there life on mars? |

My understood meaning of this song is that he fell in love with a girl and they just lost it. Personally, i connect this song with Just Like A Woman...she could love him like a woman but when it came down to it she was just a child...they lost their love and that doesn't mean it wasn't true...it also doesn't mean he's angry. I get no angry vibes from this song. I think it just goes like this: perhaps break ups are just as mysterious as falling in love..not always, but in this case yes. Things happen for no reason and can end just as mysteriously. "I gave her my heart, but she wanted my soul" she was too young to understand to take what was given, she wanted too much... |
