The Mountain Goats – Going to Tennessee Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm pretty sure I know exactly the place he was writing this song about. They have a music festival called "Memphis in May," right down on the river. As you enter the area where all the bands are playing, the river is to your right (with Arkansas on the other side) and there's a high bluff or levy to your left with a long line of houses whose backs face the river. Most of them have balconies.

I've seen them play in Memphis before, and seeing as most of those houses are owned by music lovers who live there so they can watch bands play for free every May, I wouldn't be surprised if he had a friend there and wrote the song sitting on one of those balconies.

The Mountain Goats – Sail On (Commodores cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
The narrator falls in love with a girl. He's kind of a timid guy, so he's slow to push forward. She doesn't turn him away, even though she's not really into him. And after awhile, she just gives him the cold shoulder out of nowhere.

This song is his response.

I especially like, "and the way you look at me, well it's condescending."

The Decemberists – July, July! Lyrics 18 years ago
Of all of their songs, this one sounds the most like something They Might Be Giants would sing.
